Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consultant in Spinal Cord Injury to join our team at The Golden Jubilee Regional Spinal Cord Injury Centre at The James Cook University Hospital. This is a replacement appointment to join existing colleagues in a purpose-built centre integrated within a major trauma centre with full supporting facilities.

About the Role

The Regional Spinal Cord Injuries Centre serves a geographically based catchment in the North of England, from the Scottish Border down to the Lake District and Scarborough, with a population of 1 million. There are 4 HDU (two ventilated) and 20 rehabilitation beds. The Centre runs outreach clinics and has geographically based outreach specialist nursing and rehabilitation staff. The centre is supported by a specialist urologist, a specialist plastic surgeon, a hand surgeon, an intensivist and a spinal surgical and neurosurgical team. In addition, there is psychological support, a dedicated social worker, an IT specialist and audit support.

Main Responsibilities

The main priority for this post will be to deliver the highest clinical standards in the practice of spinal cord injured patients. The post holder will take a lead role within the multi-disciplinary team managing spinal cord injured patients. The post is based within the Spinal Cord Injuries Centre based within The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough and serves a regional population of 1 million. The post holder will be provided with a mentor for a period of 1-2 years.

Requirements
  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCP/MRCS or appropriate specialist qualification
  • Relevant CCT or equivalent ('equivalence' must be confirmed by PMETB/GMC by date of AAC)
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC
Desirable Qualifications and Attributes
  • Training in appraisal techniques
  • Leadership skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GP's, nurses and other agencies
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
  • Resident within 10 miles or 30 minutes of the hospital
What We Offer

The James Cook University Hospital is a major tertiary and teaching centre with over 1,000 beds, serving a largely urban population. It provides comprehensive regional specialties including Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, Plastic Surgery, ENT and Ophthalmic Surgery. It is a regional centre for Spinal Cord Injury, Upper GI and Vascular Surgery. All other major specialties are catered for. The Friarage Hospital, Northallerton, serves a population of 120,000 covering 1,000 sq miles of rural North Yorkshire, and provides local medical services for the area. The hospital has recently undergone major re-development.

Location

The quality of life for professionals and their families in the North East of England is good with easy access to attractive countryside and beaches, a choice of highly rated schools and good travel access to the North and Scotland, the Lake District or the South by road, rail or air.
