Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Orthoptist to lead our Neuro-Ophthalmology service in Buckinghamshire. As a highly respected professional in the field, you will be responsible for assessing patients, developing treatment plans, and providing clinical supervision to junior staff members.

Main Duties

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assessing patients with complex medical problems, including those with neurological and medical conditions
  • Developing and implementing individual treatment plans and care pathways for patients of all ages
  • Providing clinical supervision to junior staff members and contributing to the development of the service
  • Collaborating with other healthcare professionals to ensure seamless care delivery

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • DBO, BSc (hons) Orthoptics, or BMed Sci Orthoptics qualification
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council
  • Evidence of Continued Professional Development
  • BIOS accredited postgraduate training in VPD
  • Membership of Neuro-Ophthalmology CAG and participation in departmental teaching programmes

Essential Criteria

The successful candidate will have:

  • Undergraduate orthoptic clinical experience and excellent postgraduate experience in all aspects of clinical Orthoptics
  • Assessment, treatment, and diagnosis of patients with IIH
  • Experience of clinical teaching and audit
  • Ability to manage a complex workload and work unsupervised

Desirable Criteria

The ideal candidate will also possess:

  • Research experience
  • Negotiating and persuasive skills for BIOS Representative

Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge

The successful candidate will have:

  • Ability to assess, diagnose, and treat full range of Orthoptic cases
  • Ability to manage and take responsibility for own workload and provide clinical supervision to junior members of staff
  • Ability to conduct visual fields using Humphrey Field analyser
  • Extensive knowledge of conditions post stroke
  • Excellent communication skills, including verbal and non-verbal techniques

Special Circumstances

The ideal candidate will also have:

  • Normal visual acuity with both eyes open with glasses or contact lenses
  • Good physical dexterity and hand-eye coordination
