The University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) is seeking a highly skilled Consultant in Emergency Ophthalmology and Cataract to join its esteemed team of ophthalmologists. As a key member of the Bristol Eye Hospital, you will play a pivotal role in driving the future vision of care across Bristol and Weston.

About the Role

This full-time (10 PA) post offers an exciting opportunity to provide leadership for a multi-disciplinary team of doctors, nurses, and optometrists in the busy eye casualty department. You will contribute to the planned development of emergency eye care for the region, working closely with the Service Lead and Assistant General Manager.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in the general ophthalmology on-call rota with a frequency of 1 in 12 (less than 1 in 8 with on-call supplement 1%).
  • Manage a caseload of patients, working with service managers and clinical colleagues to ensure clinical, national, and local priorities are achieved.
  • Develop and implement efficient systems for the triage of referrals, discharge summaries, and management of patients who do not attend (DNA) their appointments or admissions.
Person Specification

We are seeking a candidate with:

  • Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or eligibility for specialist registration within six months of interview.
  • Extensive experience in general ophthalmology and sub-specialty experience in emergency ophthalmology.
  • Up-to-date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty, including independent cataract surgical skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, clinical colleagues, support staff, and other colleagues.
