About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Gardens and Grounds Manager to lead our team at Leeds Castle. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for the management and maintenance of our Grade II listed parkland, formal and woodland gardens, farmland, and estate woodland.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide professional support to the Foundation, including Health and Safety, training, projects, and maintenance.
  • Manage resources effectively to ensure high standards of presentation and refreshment of planting.
  • Undertake research into the history of Gardens and Grounds to inform work and improve conservation, environmental, ecological, and public access value.
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders to develop and deliver new projects, such as the Kitchen Garden.
  • Ensure excellent visitor experience through tours, talks, and community engagement.
  • Build on Gardens and Grounds Volunteering cohort and ensure clear workplans for gardening and public-facing roles.
  • Identify and manage risks in the outdoors, including tree safety, plant health, biosecurity, and environmental risks.
  • Lead and manage the Gardens and Grounds team, ensuring clear objectives, ongoing feedback, and annual performance reviews.
Requirements
  • Minimum Level 3 Hort Qual or relevant degree.
  • Excellent plant and gardens history knowledge.
  • Excellent woodland management knowledge.
  • Understanding of requirements and complexities of working in a heritage environment.
  • Sound knowledge of Health and Safety and legal compliance requirements.
Desirable Skills
  • Good understanding of nature conservation and biodiversity.
  • Knowledge of appropriate land and woodland management grant schemes.
Experience
  • 3-5 years of experience in managing significant gardens, ideally in a heritage environment.
  • Experience of planning and managing new gardens projects, including planting, budget management, and operational setup.
  • Experience of propagation and growing fruit and vegetables.
  • Experience of woodland and parkland management.
  • Experience of managing gardens and grounds teams to high standards.
  • Experience of working with volunteers and community groups.
