Maintenance Supervisor Job Description

At Dartmoor Zoo, we are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Maintenance Supervisor to join our team. As a key member of our maintenance team, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of our facilities and infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage and coordinate the maintenance team to ensure the effective maintenance of our site, including animal enclosures, buildings, grounds, equipment, and department facilities.
  • Develop and implement a planned preventative maintenance schedule to minimize downtime and ensure optimal performance.
  • Oversee the recruitment, training, and development of maintenance staff, volunteers, and contractors to ensure they meet their contract obligations and comply with regulations.
  • Implement and enforce organizational health and safety policies and procedures within the maintenance team.
  • Collaborate with department heads to ensure effective communication and coordination of projects on site.
  • Contribute to strategic and operational business plans from a maintenance perspective.
  • Research and provide information, including costings, for proposals requiring maintenance team input.
  • Prepare estimates for budgets for the maintenance department annually in conjunction with the Head of Finance.
  • Oversee the ordering of materials, equipment, and contracted services to ensure best value for money.
  • Ensure sufficient staff are on duty and arrange rotas, holidays, and lieu days accordingly.
Requirements:
  • Relevant Facility Management experience.
  • Staff management experience, with the ability to get the best out of individuals in a team.
  • Excellent communication skills to liaise with a wide range of people.
  • Hands-on experience in maintenance, preferably within a commercial environment.
  • Multi-skilled, ideally with a Mechanical or Electrical bias.
  • Competent with IT, including updating spreadsheets, understanding databases, and using Word documents.
  • Demonstrable previous Project Management experience.
