Job Summary

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust is seeking an experienced and dynamic Occupational Therapist to lead and develop the Major Trauma Occupational Therapy team. As a senior clinician, you will work closely with the multidisciplinary team to provide high-quality therapeutic care and ensure smooth and appropriate discharge planning. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in major trauma, trauma orthopaedics, cardiothoracic, or neurosurgery, and demonstrate excellent leadership and communication skills.

Main Duties
  1. Lead and contribute to the development of a comprehensive occupational therapy service in the major trauma department.
  2. Stand in for the Head of Service in their absence and represent Occupational Therapy at Trust-wide and other meetings.
  3. Provide a comprehensive assessment, treatment, and evaluation of all referred patients.
  4. Lead the team and provide day-to-day management, support, supervision, and organization of workload for staff.
  5. Recruit and manage staff within the team.
  6. Support the Head of Service in the day-to-day management of the department.
  7. Be professionally and legally accountable for your own actions and work with no supervision.

Job Responsibilities
  1. Ensure patients, relatives, and carers are aware of the role of the Occupational Therapist and components of the Occupational Therapy treatment programme.
  2. Obtain informed consent from patients and work within the current legal framework for patients who lack capacity to consent.
  3. Select from a range of assessments to aid diagnosis and address trauma management, sensory, cognitive, perceptual, behavioural, motor, splinting, psychosocial needs, and functional abilities.
  4. Make reliable interpretations of assessment results and inform other professionals in the diagnosis and management of patient needs.
  5. Carry out home assessments and follow-up visits to facilitate discharge.
  6. Assess for and provide aids and adaptive equipment to increase, enable, or compensate for independent function.
  7. Assess for wheelchairs, specialist seating, and positioning needs and treat as required.
  8. Assess for and identify the appropriate type of mechanical lifting device/hoist to be used in a patient's home for discharge.
  9. Assess disability access and safety and ensure access to community resources.
  10. Advise the Major Trauma team on rehabilitation and discharge options for patients.
  11. Review, record, and report regularly on patient progress and treatment.
  12. Provide education and advice to patients and carers on the complexity of the trauma process and physical and emotional deficits affecting safety and independence.
  13. Impart sensitive information and advice to patients and carers, which may have life-changing consequences.
  14. Use verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients.
  15. Utilize interpersonal skills, demonstrating empathy, and involving patients in their treatment to achieve treatment goals.
  16. Plan, deliver, and review treatment programmes in close liaison with the MDT, patients, carers, and family.
  17. Maintain up-to-date records of all patient contacts, MDT care plans, Occupational Therapy assessments, and reports.
  18. Attend and participate in case conferences and ward meetings.
  19. Responsible for maintaining competence in the use of moving and handling techniques and equipment.
  20. Provide complex discharge planning, identifying patient and carer needs, and ensuring coordination of services in the community.
  21. Refer patients to relevant follow-up services to ensure continuation of treatment.
  22. Actively participate, liaise, and communicate with the MDT, carers, social services, statutory, and voluntary bodies to ensure a comprehensive discharge package.
  23. Liaise effectively with other hospitals, rehabilitation centers, etc. as necessary when patients are transferred.
  24. Responsible for taking action to ensure defective equipment is withdrawn from service and defects are reported to the OT Manager.
  25. Contribute to the evaluation and introduction of assessment/treatment media/equipment/tools being used within the team and department.
  26. Prioritize day-to-day management of own caseload, allocating/delegating activities to Band 6 and 5 OTs and support staff where appropriate.
  27. Responsible for the organization of work and leave cover for the Team to ensure continuity of the specialist service.
  28. Adopt a flexible approach in the provision of clinical cover during the absence of other therapists within the Team and Department.
  29. Responsible for providing and maintaining accurate patient statistics, departmental records/reports as required.
  30. Responsible for maintaining up-to-date records of all patient contacts, Occupational Therapy assessments, and reports while ensuring confidentiality.
  31. Take an active role in audit and inter-disciplinary development within the Department.
  32. Undertake any duties commensurate with the grade of post as requested by the Occupational Therapy Manager.
  33. Initiate and lead projects to develop services in line with recent NHS initiatives and guidance and in response to demand.
  34. Utilize a high level of time management and organizational skills, managing own diary of treatment sessions, appointments, and visits.
  35. Responsible for ensuring that competence for practice is maintained through continued professional development and postgraduate training.
  36. Responsible for monitoring and evaluating staff performance and ensuring supervision and appraisal of all staff within the Team.
  37. Responsible for monitoring and evaluating outcomes of intervention in the Team to ensure the effectiveness of a specialist service and use of resources.
  38. Take the lead in ensuring the continuing development of a comprehensive service to your specialist clinical area.
  39. Actively develop clinical pathways and protocols within the area, demonstrating an understanding and application of national guidelines and legislation relating to health service provision.
  40. Lead in inter-disciplinary, multidisciplinary training/teaching on behalf of Occupational Therapy within your specialist field.
  41. Responsible for providing an in-service training programme for all staff within your Team and providing any specialist teaching to the OT Department.
  42. Participate in the operational planning, implementation of policy, service development, and development of clinical guidelines in accordance with recent evidence and best practice within your Team.
  43. Responsible for ensuring all team members have awareness of and adhere to local standards and policies, have access, and regularly attend professional meetings and courses relevant to the specialist area.
  44. Participate in providing teaching, instruction, learning opportunities, work experience, and training for Occupational Therapy Students, staff, and students from other Departments/Wards, as agreed with the OT Manager.
  45. Provide regular fieldwork placements for student Occupational Therapists.
  46. Participate in inter-disciplinary, multidisciplinary training/teaching, and professional education in the Trust as required.
  47. Responsible for induction of Occupational Therapy staff and Occupational Therapy students within the Team and the Department.
  48. Exercise good personal time management, punctuality, and consistent reliable attendance.
  49. Attend and contribute to Team lead and seniors meetings, contributing to the discussion and actively participating in any Departmental changes.
  50. Contribute to the development of Departmental guidelines and protocols.
  51. Demonstrate the ability to reflect on ethical issues and provide guidance to junior staff as necessary.
  52. Contribute to the Trust, Directorate, and Service clinical governance arrangements and quality agenda.
  53. Be prepared to share areas of knowledge and experience, through formal/informal teaching, supervision sessions, or in-service training.
  54. Ensure referrals and tasks are actioned in a timely manner, taking into consideration clinical priorities in case management.
  55. Responsible for ensuring effective communication always takes place, taking a team approach to patient care and service needs.
  56. Responsible for keeping up to date with all immunisations.
  57. Responsible for attending statutory trainings and courses.
  58. Participate regularly in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, survey, research, and inter-disciplinary development within the unit.
  59. Assist in the recruitment of staff to the Department and other services as required.
