Job Title: Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant

Hays Specialist Recruitment Limited is currently recruiting for a Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant to work in schools in Cheltenham. As a Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in a 1:1 setting.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Preparing the classroom for lessons and maintaining a safe and clean environment
  • Assisting teachers in preparing lesson materials and school equipment
  • Recording and reporting children's progress to teachers
  • Helping children stay focused during class hours
  • Supervising group activities, sports events, and school outings
  • Helping teachers manage student behavior
  • Supporting teachers in improving the core skills of children with SEN, such as reading, writing, or providing 1:1 care
  • Looking after children who are unwell or upset
  • Creating a healthy, engaging, and safe learning environment for children
Requirements:
  • Understanding of Special Educational Needs, including physical or mental impairments, learning difficulties, ADHD, and ASD
  • Ability to guide and support children with SEN (ages 5-11)
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to build positive relationships with children and colleagues
  • Ability to create an encouraging and appropriate learning environment for children with SEN
  • Empathy and understanding towards children and their needs
  • Ability to use technology, such as computers or hand-held devices
  • Resilience and ability to respond calmly under stress
  • Adaptability and flexibility in work attitude
  • Ability to learn and use strategies to manage classroom and individual behavior
Essential Qualifications:
  • Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant, SEN Teaching Assistant, or equivalent (at least 40 days in the last 5 years)
Desired Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field
  • Level 2 or 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools or similar
  • Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education or similar
  • T Level in Education and Early Years or similar
