About the Role

The Central Laser Facility is seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual to join our team as an Industrial Placement student in High Repetition Rate Targetry Development. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of cutting-edge technologies and work alongside world-leading engineers, scientists, and technicians.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement automated target assembly projects using pick and place robots, automated glue dispensing, and palletization of targets.
  • Support the scientific and engineering development of high-repetition rate technologies, including liquid targets, additive manufacturing, and tape target developments.
  • Contribute to the operational delivery of targets to experiments on the Vulcan and Gemini laser systems.
  • Collaborate with the team to improve yield of picked and placed objects by implementing engineering solutions and testing outcomes.
  • Integrate the CLF Tape drive system into the robotic assembly project.
  • Work in a clean-room laboratory environment and maintain a high level of attention to detail.
  • Complete project documentation by tracking progress against milestones.
  • Run 3D printing technology for the benefit of the wider group.
  • Use CAD skills to assist the wider group with 3D design.
Requirements
  • Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course.
  • Required or have requested to take an industrial placement year.
  • Able to commence employment in summer 2024.
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement.
  • Subject of degree to be Physics, Robotics, Engineering, or closely related.
  • Good knowledge of the basics of physics, A-level Physics (or equivalent) minimum.
  • Knowledge of robotics or automation (university project or individual interest).
  • Working experience with 3D CAD design software.
  • Good knowledge of how different materials are suited to different applications in an engineering context.
  • Familiarity with Windows operating system.
  • Good understanding of the terms repeatability, accuracy, and tolerance in an engineering context.
  • The ability to work individually on a project, plan effectively, and write reports.
  • Can identify hazards and work safely in a challenging environment.
Desirable
  • Basic knowledge of the type of experiment that could take place with a high-power laser.
  • Some relevant programming experience with control systems for robotics.
  • Experience using a 3D printer.
  • Has used Solid Edge or Autodesk Inventor.
  • Proven examples of working in a team to complete a technical or scientific project.
  • Has presented project work to their academic supervisors or peers.
