About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Biomedical Scientist to join our Haematology team at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, you will play a crucial role in providing high-quality laboratory services to support patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess the suitability and appropriateness of samples received, liaising with medical staff as necessary.
  • Ensure satisfactory completion and validation of routine and specialist haematology & transfusion analyses.
  • Use specialist knowledge across a range of procedures, authorise test results and initiate further tests as appropriate.
  • Ensure data integrity when entering demographics and results into the laboratory information system.
  • Use acquired skills and experience for film reporting, malaria diagnosis and selection of films for referral to Haematologist.
  • Take responsibility for finishing, checking, validating, and authorising colleagues' work as necessary.
  • Check the validity and reliability of analytical processes, maintaining and monitoring satisfactory performance by internal quality control and external quality assessment.
  • Promptly refer results that exceed action limits to senior or department medical staff, wards, and GPs, performing technical interpretation of partial, complex, or conflicting results to facilitate patient care.
  • Set up and check instrumentation for correct operation, troubleshooting and correcting minor faults, reporting major faults to senior staff or instrument engineers as appropriate.
  • Monitor and store consumables and reagents.
  • Assume enhanced responsibility in the absence of supervisory and other staff as necessitated by regular rota commitments.
  • Take responsibility for selection of correct blood, and blood products, involving antibody identification and patient phenotyping, to make best use of stocks, and to ensure the integrity of all blood and blood products for patient transfusion.
  • Participate in developmental work, performing specialised tests when necessary, and assisting in any clinical trials.
  • Work independently at large, offsite, outpatient clinics providing POCT at a satellite laboratory requiring data entry, processing and generation of treatment reports.
  • Participate in the trusts annual joint review process, relevant to grade.
  • Provide a rapid, reliable and efficient results service by performing a comprehensive range of routine and specialist haematology & transfusion analyses, or referral to other providers as needed.
  • Work within the accepted rules and procedures of both the Trust and the department.
  • Apply specialised knowledge and skills in key areas where necessary.
  • Offer guidance on the services available from the speciality, information about the analyses performed, and to refer medical queries to Haematologist for clinical advice.
  • Communicate with clinical and haematology staff to resolve critical patient concerns.
  • Assist in the supervision and instruction of trainee and less experienced Biomedical Scientists, laboratory assistants and support staff.
  • Continually improve service provision, undertaking developmental work as required.

Person Specification
  • Qualified as an experienced State Registered Biomedical Scientist.
  • HCPC registration.
  • CPD.
  • Significant experience of modern laboratory techniques and good knowledge of current professional issues.
  • Knowledge of specialist Haematology and Transfusion procedures to post-graduate diploma level (or equivalent) acquired though CPD, short courses and ongoing specialist training.
  • Knowledge of COSHH legislation, fire regulations, Data Protection Act, postal regulations, Ionising Radiation Rules and Regulations.
  • Awareness of hazards and dangers and the correct protocol to follow in the event of intrusion, fire or other emergency situation. Awareness of remedial action for uncontained infectious, chemical or radioactive material.
  • Service development. Contribute to the implementation of services, making suggestions and input into service and policy.
  • Understanding of the importance of IQA, and external quality control systems eg: NEQAS.
  • Data processing and management. Knowledge of the implications of the Caldicott Report and Data Protection Act.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to supervise and train others.
  • Computer literate - capable of utilising complex proprietary information systems and generic software.
  • Developed skills to communicate complex information between diverse staff groups.
