York, York City, United Kingdom Network Rail Full time

Overview

As the Public Relations Lead, you will be responsible for executing a comprehensive media relations strategy that promotes the organization's policies and initiatives while safeguarding its interests across various regions and business sectors. This role is essential to align with the national media and communication strategies of the company.

About the Position

We are thrilled to present an opportunity to become a part of one of the busiest press teams in the organization. We seek a Communications Strategy Manager to highlight our efforts in enhancing rail services for both passengers and freight, elevate our safety initiatives, and craft engaging content that aids travelers in their journeys.

This position covers significant rail routes, including:

  • The East Coast main line extending from Kings Cross to the Scottish border,
  • The Midland Main Line from St. Pancras to Sheffield via Nottingham, Leicester, and Derby,
  • Key railway lines across the North East, encompassing all TransPennine routes.

We are in search of an exceptional communicator with a robust background in media relations and social media, who enjoys collaboration and storytelling.

The ideal candidate will possess innovative ideas for showcasing our personnel and their groundbreaking work, with the intuition to discern the optimal timing and method for sharing these narratives.

In challenging situations, they will adeptly manage our reputation, address misreporting, and handle negative stories with skill.

Strong relationships with broadcast and online newsrooms are essential, along with filming and editing expertise to create content for press releases and social media platforms.

We require someone with excellent journalist connections, a keen sense for newsworthy stories, and the ability to perform under pressure to deliver clear and accessible information to journalists and the public during disruptions.

We encourage you to explore and document stories by visiting various sites, including maintaining historical viaducts, collaborating with ecologists on environmental projects, or inspecting railway tunnels to ensure the preservation of our infrastructure.

This role is dynamic and involves engaging with people, capturing footage, and disseminating stories. It is a position that fosters career development and continuous learning.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Participate in delivering a comprehensive, 24/7 press desk service for the organization, including on-call duties for out-of-hours media needs.
  2. Execute national media campaigns aligned with company goals and priorities.
  3. Effectively manage processes, quality standards, and operational systems for regional media coordination and information exchange.
  4. Implement strategies and activities in the media landscape that support the objectives outlined in the company's national media and communication strategies.
  5. Oversee the production of press releases, briefing sessions, media visits, and photo opportunities. Organize broadcasts as necessary and monitor media commentary to prepare appropriate responses.
  6. Monitor social media channels and provide timely and accurate responses as needed.
  7. Keep senior media relations management informed of significant media inquiries or activities.
  8. Evaluate the effectiveness of press coverage and take corrective actions when necessary.
  9. Maintain regular communication with editors and senior journalists to ensure they understand our role and policies and are aware of key stories.
  10. Implement the major incident communications plan as required.
