Overview
We are seeking a dedicated Landscape Care Specialist to become a permanent member of our team at Lanhydrock, National Trust.
As a Landscape Care Specialist, you will actively participate in all aspects of garden maintenance at Lanhydrock. Your responsibilities will include daily upkeep and ensuring the highest standards of horticultural practices; you will also contribute significantly to enhancing the visitor experience within the garden and surrounding estate. Occasional weekend, bank holiday, and evening work may be required.
Please include a cover letter with your application, detailing how your skills align with this role and what you can contribute to our garden.
Work Environment
The Lanhydrock estate features a grade 1 listed mansion set within a 25-acre garden, surrounded by 910 acres of parkland and countryside. The property reflects its late Victorian grandeur, serving as the home of Thomas, 2nd Lord Robartes, his wife Mary, and their extensive family, supported by a staff of 80. It offers a unique perspective on the operations of a country estate.
The garden team is led by the Head Gardener and includes a Senior Gardener, two Grade 9 Gardeners (including this position), a Seasonal Gardener, and a Garden Apprentice, along with a growing number of volunteers.
Your Responsibilities
You will be instrumental in maintaining the garden and estate in excellent condition on a daily basis.
This role primarily involves the management of the Woodland Garden, collaborating with other team members. Responsibilities will include routine tasks such as seasonal and formative pruning, mulching, planting, staking, chainsaw operation, tractor driving, strimming, and other machinery tasks. Daily safety checks will be necessary to ensure all areas are secure for visitors, along with health and safety duties, including routine risk assessments and tree safety management surveys.
Additional tasks will involve assisting team members with the overall maintenance of other garden areas, including lawn mowing, trimming of yew trees and hedges, waste management, bulb and bedding planting, weeding, and care of the lodges and estate entrances.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for a skilled Landscape Care Specialist with relevant qualifications and experience in horticulture, along with a solid understanding of tree and shrub identification and management. The ideal candidate will possess:
- A passion for horticulture and hands-on gardening experience, particularly in woodland garden care and maintenance.
- Training in MEWP or working at height.
- Experience with machinery, including tractors, chainsaws, polesaws, rotary and cylinder mowers, strimmers, and hedge trimmers, along with some maintenance knowledge.
- A valid driver's license.
- The ability to manage a demanding outdoor role.
- Strong interpersonal skills to engage with a diverse range of people.
- Confidence in working collaboratively within a team, with volunteers, or independently.
- Effective time management and planning skills to meet deadlines.
- Basic IT proficiency.
