Landscape Caretaker - Bodmin

Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Landscape Caretaker to become a permanent member of our team at Lanhydrock, National Trust.

As a Landscape Caretaker, you will be an integral part of the gardening team, engaging in all facets of landscape management at Lanhydrock. Your responsibilities will include daily upkeep and maintaining exceptional horticultural standards; you will also contribute significantly to enhancing the visitor experience within the garden and surrounding estate. Occasional weekend, bank holiday, and evening work may be required.

Please include a cover letter with your application, detailing how your skills align with this role and what you can contribute to our landscape.

Work Environment

The Lanhydrock estate features a grade 1 listed mansion set within a 25-acre garden, surrounded by 910 acres of parkland and countryside. The property showcases its late Victorian glory, once home to Thomas, 2nd Lord Robartes, his wife Mary, and their large family, supported by a staff of 80. It offers a captivating glimpse into the operations of a country estate.

The garden is overseen by the Head Gardener, with a team that includes a Senior Gardener, two Grade 9 Gardeners (including this position), a Seasonal Gardener, and a Garden Apprentice, along with a growing number of volunteers.

Your Responsibilities

You will assist in maintaining the garden and estate areas in excellent condition daily.

This role primarily involves the daily management of the Woodland Garden, collaborating with other team members. Responsibilities will include routine tasks such as seasonal and formative pruning, mulching, planting and staking, chainsaw operation, tractor driving, strimming, and other machinery tasks. You will also conduct daily safety checks to ensure all areas are secure for visitors, perform health and safety duties like routine risk assessments, and manage tree safety surveys.

Additional tasks will involve supporting team members in the overall care of other garden areas, including lawn mowing, trimming of Irish yew trees and hedges, recycling and waste management, bulb and bedding planting, weeding, and maintaining lodges and estate entrances.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for a skilled Landscape Caretaker with relevant qualifications and experience in horticulture, along with a solid understanding of tree and shrub identification and management. The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A passion for horticulture and hands-on gardening experience, particularly in woodland garden maintenance and hard landscaping.
  • MEWP or working at height certification.
  • Experience with machinery, including tractor driving, chainsaws, polesaws, rotary and cylinder mowers, strimmers, and hedge trimmers, along with some maintenance knowledge.
  • A valid driver's license.
  • The ability to manage a demanding outdoor role effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to engage with a diverse range of people.
