Head of External Communications and Government Relations

As a key member of the AECOM team, the Head of External Communications and Government Relations will play a critical role in shaping the company's external communications strategy and building relationships with government entities, regulatory bodies, and key stakeholders across Europe and India.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in corporate media relations and government affairs, with a proven track record of developing and executing effective communications strategies that drive business results. They will be responsible for managing a team of press officers and overseeing AECOM's external communications across continental Europe and India, as well as external agencies providing media and government relations services.
Key Responsibilities:- Strategic Communications and Leadership: Develop and implement a comprehensive external communications strategy aligned with AECOM's regional priorities and brand, ensuring consistent and effective messaging across all external channels.
- Government Relations: Build and maintain strong relationships with central and local government stakeholders, regulatory bodies, and industry associations to influence policy and regulatory developments, and provide strategic advice to senior leadership.
- Media Relations: Develop and execute a media relations strategy that promotes AECOM's brand across the region, manages media inquiries, and coordinates with internal communications and social media leads to ensure alignment.
- Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration: Lead engagement with relevant external stakeholders, including industry partners, non-governmental organizations, and community leaders, and work closely with the internal communications team to ensure alignment between internal and external messaging.
- Minimum 10 years' experience in corporate media relations and government affairs, ideally with a background in a newsroom.
- Deep market knowledge and contacts across the media, political, and economic landscapes affecting the infrastructure, construction, and engineering markets.
- Experience managing a team and providing communications training and support to senior leaders and other company representatives.
- Proven experience working in communications during major incidents or crisis situations, with a strong networker and ability to advocate on behalf of AECOM to key political stakeholders.
- Exceptional stakeholder engagement skills, with a strategic mindset and the gravitas needed to present to senior executives, speak to national journalists, and network with politicians.
