About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Head of External Communications to join our team at the Head Office. As a key member of our Communications department, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the external image of our company and driving our commercial success.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading our External Communications team, overseeing brand and lifestyle PR, Media Relations, Sustainability and Purpose PR, Public Affairs, and Financial and Strategic Communications teams. You will work closely with our brands to amplify and deepen customer marketing activity and enhance messaging.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading, mentoring, and motivating the External Communications Team to ensure high performance, creativity, and innovation.
  • Ensuring the Communications team collaborates effectively with other business areas for maximum impact, both commercially and reputationally.
  • Implementing a corporate and brand communications and engagement program, focusing on brand initiatives, corporate news, celebratory moments, and campaigns supported by positive storytelling.
  • Managing a busy media relations function while mitigating potential risks and issues.
  • Ensuring external communications and engagement activities reach a broad audience, managing a complex set of stakeholders with varying needs.

What you will be doing:

  • Leading, mentoring, and motivating the External Communications Team, maintaining high standards and encouraging innovation and creativity.
  • Prioritizing, coordinating, and sequencing campaign activity with our brands for maximum impact, showing discipline in message delivery.
  • Collaborating closely with other Communications teams and key teams across the company.
  • Advising and providing counsel to senior leaders on communication matters related to the reputation and profile of our brands and the company.
  • Using insights and measurement to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of the External Communications team's work.
  • Implementing communication and engagement strategies aligned with business priorities.
  • Developing and maintaining a network of external stakeholders such as journalists, analysts, and influencers.

Essential skills and qualifications:

  • Significant experience running an in-house corporate and/or lifestyle External Communications Team for high-profile consumer or retail brands.
  • Established relationships with key UK lifestyle, consumer, financial, and business media.
  • Deep understanding of crisis and issues management, with the ability to stay calm under pressure and provide sound advice.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with proven success in working with senior stakeholders.
  • Creatively minded, able to generate impactful story ideas in a competitive market.
  • A coaching mentality to empower teams to excel.
  • Excellent attention to detail, capable of managing multiple projects in a high-pressure environment.
  • Ability to prioritize resources and budgets, demonstrating agility when plans need to adapt.
  • Knowledge of products and trends across retail categories relevant to our company (food, fashion, beauty, home, tech); knowledge of financial services and rental property is advantageous.
