Russian Language Specialist Programme
Location: Various
Compensation: £6,193 - £6,908 (location dependent) for an 11-week internship
GCHQ and MI5 represent the UK's Intelligence Services, collaborating to protect the nation’s citizens, interests, and enterprises from diverse threats, including cyber-attacks, espionage, terrorism, and organized crime. Engaging in our essential missions, you will contribute significantly to national security within a nurturing and inclusive atmosphere that fosters growth.
This is a remarkable 11-week paid internship where you will engage directly with our language teams, making a substantial impact on our operations.
As a motivated and adaptable individual, you will leverage your Russian language proficiency and cultural insights to interpret the subtleties in both audio and written content. Utilizing specialized tools, you will extract critical information to present to your team, providing essential context for colleagues and intelligence partners.
Within a welcoming community of language experts, you will collaborate with your team, showcasing your cultural awareness by translating and transcribing Russian materials, which may include technical or specialized content. Your contributions will influence operations as you share your findings, and you will also have opportunities to draft intelligence reports and conduct research. This is an exciting chance to enhance your language skills, realize your potential, and work alongside others who share your enthusiasm for language.
To qualify, you should possess (or anticipate obtaining) at least a 2:2 degree in Russian and be in your final year of study or have graduated recently. You must be a British Citizen (or hold dual nationality with one component being British) and have resided in the UK for seven out of the last ten years.
While a technical background is not required, a willingness to learn and develop new skills, particularly those that complement your language expertise, is essential. You will receive a salary of £6,193 - £6,908 based on your location, along with additional benefits such as 5.5 days of annual leave and access to subsidized amenities.
This program includes a blend of classroom instruction and practical experience, designed to enhance your skills and expand your knowledge. You will be supported by experienced professionals and receive coaching and mentoring to help you excel.
Upon completion of the language program, you will have the opportunity to apply for a permanent position, contingent upon assessments and a competency interview. If successful, you will become a language specialist at GCHQ, with the chance to participate in our Language Career Development Scheme, aimed at furthering your skills and potentially leading to professional qualifications.
