About Diamond Light Source

Diamond Light Source serves as the UK's national synchrotron, a significant scientific establishment dedicated to generating highly intense beams of X-rays, infrared, and ultraviolet light. The engineering team at Diamond empowers scientists to utilize synchrotron light for investigating a diverse array of subjects, ranging from novel medical treatments to pioneering engineering solutions and advanced technologies.

Role Overview

This position offers a distinctive opportunity for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to collaborate with the UK National Cryo-Electron Microscopy Facility on a fixed-term contract.

The primary objective of this role is to facilitate the development of a comprehensive cryo-sample transfer and storage automation system. This entails extensive research, development, and testing of components in cryogenic conditions.

The successful applicant will spearhead engineering innovations and advancements necessary for the creation of sample holder formats, cassettes, and shipping containers tailored for the automation enhancement. Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering creative, innovative, and adaptable engineering solutions.
  • Creating engineering designs utilizing CAD software.
  • Conducting Static Structural Analysis through analytical and FEA methodologies.
  • Performing Thermal/Cryogenic Analysis employing analytical and FEA techniques.
  • Testing and validating prototypes for Mechanical, Thermal, and Motion systems.
  • Managing project documentation and files.
  • Leading Risk Assessments and implementing strategies to mitigate identified risks.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess a degree in Engineering or substantial equivalent experience. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate knowledge and experience in:

  • Designing systems capable of functioning under extreme conditions, including Ultra High Vacuum and cryogenic environments.
  • Creating engineering drawings and 3D models, along with familiarity in modern manufacturing techniques, including additive manufacturing.
  • Conducting risk assessments and understanding relevant directives such as the Machinery Directive.
  • Collaborating effectively within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Exhibiting strong communication skills to articulate ideas, present solutions, and engage in collaborative discussions throughout project phases.
  • Hands-on experience in research and development.

Candidates lacking direct experience in all areas will still be considered if they exhibit a clear understanding of the fundamental physical principles during the interview, coupled with a strong desire to learn. This role presents an excellent development opportunity for a promising candidate without prior senior engineering experience.

Benefits

Diamond provides an outstanding benefits package designed to support employees in achieving a healthy work/life balance. This includes 26 days of annual leave, public holidays, 2 annual volunteering days, and flexible working arrangements. Additionally, an excellent defined benefit pension scheme is available. Employees also have access to various onsite amenities, including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant, and sports and leisure facilities. A relocation allowance may be offered where applicable.

This role is eligible for a non-pensionable allowance of £3,000 per annum.
