City of Edinburgh, United Kingdom ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDS SCOTLAND Full time

Environmental Standards Scotland (ESS) is in search of a new Chairperson to guide and oversee the Board and staff in achieving its mission to ensure Scotland enjoys a high-quality environment safeguarded by robust environmental legislation.

A pivotal aspect of this position involves cultivating relationships with the Scottish Parliament, Scottish Ministers, and other essential stakeholders. As a non-ministerial entity, it is crucial for the Chairperson to effectively articulate the independent perspectives of ESS as a regulatory body.

This role will emphasize the continuous evolution of the organization by developing and communicating ESS' strategic vision. This includes crafting ESS' upcoming strategic plan, which will be presented for Parliamentary review. This initiative may explore the potential for expanded powers, enhancing ESS' stature and aspirations both domestically and globally.

The Chairperson will be responsible for ensuring that ESS maintains effective policies and practices that exemplify high standards of corporate governance, including a thorough understanding of risk management and the utilization of its independent audit committee. Additionally, the Chairperson will oversee forward-looking Board succession planning, ensuring that ESS possesses the necessary skills, experience, knowledge, and diversity to function effectively. This will be accomplished while maintaining a clear distinction between the Chairperson's role and the Chief Executive's operational responsibilities. Conducting an annual evaluation of the Chief Executive's performance will be an integral part of this engagement.

The Board holds corporate accountability for ensuring that ESS' actions and decisions align with its statutory responsibilities and the mandates established in relevant legislation. Furthermore, the Board advocates for the efficient and effective utilization of resources in accordance with the principles of Best Value.
