The Development Underwriter will play a crucial role in transforming our partnerships with broker portfolios by fostering responsive, adaptable, and collaborative relationships. The focus will be on cultivating and achieving profitable growth across both new and existing business within key market segments.

This role requires travel within the designated area, as it involves direct engagement with brokers in addition to technical underwriting responsibilities. While primarily aligned with the Birmingham branch, the role will predominantly involve collaboration with brokers throughout the Midlands region. Regular travel to the Birmingham branch will be expected for team collaboration.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the representative of AXA in presenting proposals for larger Mid-Market and Mid-Corporate risks, leveraging industry expertise and technical underwriting knowledge, tailored to the complexity of each case.
  • Collaborate with Trading Underwriters to negotiate coverage, policy wordings, and pricing that distinguish AXA in meeting client requirements.
  • Proactively cultivate a strong pipeline of qualified growth opportunities in the Mid-Market and Mid-Corporate sectors, effectively managing and realizing this pipeline.
  • Lead and fully integrate the large case management process for both new and existing business.
  • Establish and nurture collaborative relationships with brokers, and occasionally clients, across the region, taking full responsibility for generating, placing, and retaining profitable commercial business.
  • Underwrite profitable new and existing business in accordance with AXA's established underwriting standards and practices, serving as a referral point within the branch.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive distribution strategy and communication plan with key influential brokers to ensure financial performance indicators are met.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the performance metrics of the region's portfolio (COR, Rate, Retention, Hot Spot trades, profit drivers, and underwriting circulars).
  • Support other regions as appropriate, aligned with specific areas of underwriting, trade segments, or industry expertise.

Your Profile:

What We Are Looking For:

  • Extensive technical underwriting knowledge with proven experience in two or more mid-market classes.
  • DIP Qualified or equivalent, with a demonstrated track record in underwriting Mid-Market and Mid-Corporate business.
  • History of securing and retaining large-scale and complex business through developed relationships with senior brokers and clients.
  • Evidence of prior technical and sales experience, extending to effective pipeline management.
  • Skills in insight development, customer relationship management, and broker portfolio management.
  • Strong personal impact and influence, with adept negotiation and persuasion abilities.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

As a prerequisite for this role, candidates must be eligible and authorized to work in the United Kingdom.

This position is classified as an Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD) role under the IDD framework, which entails that, in addition to pre-employment screening, the successful candidate will undergo background checks every four years, with annual declarations in interim years.
