Overview of the Role


As a Junior Structural/Civil Engineer, you will engage in a diverse range of stimulating and significant projects across various construction sectors throughout the UK, including healthcare, commercial, educational, retail, mixed-use, and residential developments.


Your role will be pivotal in ensuring that Scott White and Hookins Limited maintains its reputation for delivering exceptional structural and civil engineering consultancy services, demonstrating our commitment to innovative and sustainable building practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in our accredited ICE Training Programme, dedicating yourself to your professional growth through ongoing training and continuous professional development (CPD).
  • Conduct engineering analysis and design calculations for structural and civil engineering projects utilizing the latest technical software.
  • Create structural and civil engineering drawings and models using advanced versions of AutoCAD or Revit.
  • Engage in the practice's working groups, which encompass Technical, BIM, Sustainability, IT, Marketing, or Quality Assurance.
  • Report to your project manager, ensuring that your assigned tasks are completed efficiently and effectively.
  • Attend design team meetings both virtually and on-site, fostering new and existing client relationships.
  • As you progress, you will be expected to mentor and train new and junior staff members.
Location and Communication


This position is available for candidates based at our Sutton or Winchester office, with opportunities to collaborate across all offices as part of our unified approach.

You will report directly to the Engineering Manager(s) as well as the Director(s) and Associate(s) located at your office.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • A degree providing a BEng, BSc, MEng, or MSc in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ICE accredited institution.
  • Ability to articulate and communicate engineering principles, such as bending, deflection, and stability.
  • Familiarity with steel, masonry, timber, and concrete structures designed in accordance with Eurocode standards.
  • Experience with structural analysis software.
  • An understanding of BIM and its significance in the construction sector would be beneficial.
  • Research or experimental knowledge in emerging areas of the construction industry as part of your academic projects would be advantageous.
  • Experience in report writing, preparing technical drawings, and presenting ideas and concepts effectively.
  • Proficient IT skills, including report preparation, email communication, and spreadsheet management.
  • Leadership abilities would be a plus.
  • Personal development skills to pursue further training in the office and independently, aiming for CEng status.
