Overview of the Role

The Cellular Pathology Laboratory, a key component of the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, is engaged in processing approximately 35,000 to 40,000 Histology specimens annually from various locations.

Our department not only handles routine Histology samples but also specializes in Immunocytochemistry (ICC), Special Stains, Non-Gynae Diagnostic Cytology, OSNA (Intra-operative Breast Sentinel Node testing), and Digital Pathology. The main laboratory operates during standard business hours, ensuring timely service delivery.

Key Responsibilities

The role involves contributing to a specialized diagnostic pathology service that is essential for patient care, facilitating accurate diagnoses and effective treatment monitoring.

As part of the Cellular Pathology team, you will engage in a variety of clinical, scientific, and technical procedures under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. Your expertise will be crucial in delivering high-quality results in a timely manner. Please note that this position does not involve authorizing results or taking responsibility for issued results.

Detailed Responsibilities

Key tasks will include:

  • Performing routine paraffin wax embedding, sectioning, and H&E staining.
  • Preparing non-gynae diagnostic cytology specimens with appropriate training and competency completion.
  • Handling telephone inquiries and providing scientific advice as needed.
  • Conducting manual and automated laboratory investigations.
  • Performing routine maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
  • Ensuring compliance with quality standards and departmental policies.
  • Participating in the training of new staff and maintaining a portfolio of competencies.

Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications and Skills

  • NVQ3 or equivalent qualification.
  • Strong numeracy and English skills, ideally at GCSE Grade C or higher.
  • Experience in a discipline-specific NHS laboratory.
  • Proficiency in using relevant laboratory equipment and documentation.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to manage schedules and prioritize workloads effectively.
  • Commitment to patient-centered care principles.
  • Competence in IT, particularly with Windows-based software.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with laboratory instrumentation used in the department.
  • Leadership and training experience.
  • Involvement in equipment testing.
  • Competence in tissue processing and embedding.
