Job Summary

University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust is seeking a skilled and dedicated individual to join our Laboratory Medicine department as an Associate Practitioner. This is a full-time position requiring flexibility to work late shifts, night shifts, and weekdays on a rotating schedule.

Main Responsibilities

The successful candidate will assist in the departments of Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Biochemistry, and Pre-analytics, supporting diagnostic testing and compliance with established protocols and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation and processing of biological samples.
  • Support the maintenance and monitoring of laboratory equipment.
  • Enter patient data into the laboratory information management system (LIMS).
  • Perform basic laboratory tests under the supervision of a registered Biomedical Scientist (BMS).

Requirements:

  • Commitment to working late shifts, night shifts, and weekends.
  • Enthusiasm for contributing to a collaborative and dynamic team environment.
  • Previous experience working in a laboratory would be an advantage.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to work under pressure with excellent communication skills.

  • Qualifications, Knowledge, and Experience:
    • Previous experience in laboratory work
    • A level or equivalent in at least two from Maths, English, and Science at level A to C
    • Knowledge of laboratory processes
    • Able to handle a range of biological samples
    • Maintain a personal portfolio that demonstrates competence in theoretical knowledge and practical skills and compliance with Statutory and Mandatory training.
  • Desirable:
    • Previous experience in an NHS environment
    • Previous experience in a diagnostic medical laboratory
    • Previous experience of performing laboratory procedures
    • ECDL or equivalent knowledge of computers
    • Previous knowledge of hospital IT systems
    • Completion of an internal multidisciplinary laboratory training course
