Position Overview

We are seeking a Clinical Nutrition Specialist to become a vital member of our oncology department, initially offered on a temporary basis with the possibility of transitioning to a permanent position.

The ideal candidate will be proactive, passionate, and adaptable, possessing exceptional teamwork, communication, and organizational abilities. This role is suitable for dietitians with prior oncology experience or those eager to develop their expertise in this specialized field.

Your clinical knowledge and experience will play a crucial role in enhancing the delivery, development, assessment, and quality enhancement of our oncology nutrition services. You will receive comprehensive support from the Clinical Lead Dietitian and the Professional Lead for Dietetics.

Consideration for Band 6 development roles is available.

Key Responsibilities

In collaboration with the oncology multidisciplinary team (MDT), you will provide nutritional guidance and support to patients undergoing treatment.

Your skills in teamwork, supervision, and communication will be essential, along with your ability to independently assess and manage your patient caseload. A commitment to leading service improvement initiatives is also expected.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics or an equivalent qualification
  • Current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

Desirable

  • Membership in the British Dietetic Association (BDA) or another professional body
  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant clinical area of dietetics
  • Active participation in a relevant BDA Specialist Group and/or BAPEN

Experience

Essential

  • Post-qualification experience, including advanced artificial nutrition support skills
  • Experience managing patients with complex nutritional needs
  • Experience with complex enteral feed discharges
  • Evidence of recent continuing professional development in dietetics
  • Experience in service development
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience working with diverse patient groups
  • Evidence of involvement in clinical audits
  • Experience in teaching and training dietetic colleagues and other MDT members

Desirable

  • Research experience
  • Experience in upper gastrointestinal oncology, hematology services, and palliative care
  • Experience with parenteral nutrition
  • Experience supervising and appraising junior colleagues

Knowledge

Essential

  • Current knowledge of the complex effects of cancer and treatments on the nutritional status of oncology patients
  • In-depth understanding of enteral feeding systems
  • Awareness of current issues related to cancer and upper gastrointestinal conditions
  • Comprehensive knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to the specialist patient group
  • Thorough understanding of clinical governance principles and experience conducting clinical audits
