Role Overview:

Reporting to the Lead Systems Engineer, the successful applicant will become part of a dedicated and enthusiastic team responsible for delivering electrical and electronic engineering solutions throughout the organization.

This position is situated within the Group Electrics & Controls Excavator division, which is tasked with ensuring that all new JCB product initiatives meet the necessary technical specifications within the required timelines. The role demands technical expertise, practical experience, an understanding of project delivery processes, and the capability to collaborate with diverse teams to achieve product excellence.

Based at the manufacturing facility, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage directly with the product, ensuring that design specifications are effectively translated into machine operations and functionalities.

The incumbent will be accountable for coordinating the validation and verification of new electrical and electronic systems integrated into the Excavator product line.

As part of the systems engineering team, you will oversee the definition, interpretation, and development of validation and verification requirements to ensure a robust electrical/electronic system is established.

This role will involve coordinating validation and verification activities across a variety of products, with an emphasis on rationalization and commonality, while advancing new technologies, tool chains, and processes to improve the testing framework.

As a Senior Engineer in validation and verification, you will develop test plans and coordinate the delivery of system designs. You will manage the fleet of machines to ensure they are equipped with the latest components, software, and configurations. You will document defects and provide evidence of containment and root cause analysis for each issue. Furthermore, you will be responsible for preparing system-level and module-level test specifications while developing testing methodologies to demonstrate how customer requirements will be effectively met and validated through verification activities.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Excel in a dynamic environment, creating prototype solutions to validate proof of concept ideas.
  • Establish test plans to ensure comprehensive validation and verification activities.
  • Coordinate machine components, software, and setups, ensuring the latest design solutions undergo thorough testing.
  • Ensure reliable ECU communication protocols are adhered to in accordance with industry best practices (SAE J1939, Ethernet).
  • Interpret electronic schematic diagrams and their corresponding electrical wiring diagrams.
  • Consider design for manufacturing, particularly regarding the programming and parameter configuration of selected solutions.
  • Demonstrate a strong interest in monitoring system health and status through onboard diagnostic protocols or over-the-air communications.
  • Maintain meticulous records of all designs, revisions, and related updates.
  • Promote the reuse of components and methodologies.
  • Support cause and effect analysis, including risk assessments, FMEA, 8D, and Ishikawa/fishbone diagrams.

About You:

  • Experience in Tier 1 or OE sectors (on-highway or off-highway) in system engineering or software development.
  • Qualified to HND/Degree level in an electronic/electrical technology discipline or possess equivalent experience.
  • Understanding of Functional Safety and Cybersecurity techniques (ISO13849 and ISO21434).
  • Solid foundational knowledge of low-level firmware integration from bootloader to application layer and parameter configuration.
  • Familiarity with CAN bus protocols.
  • Comfortable utilizing various lab equipment to monitor system behavior, including CAN, frequencies, PWM, and basic operations.
  • Aware of the implications of functional safety and security in software development.
  • Knowledgeable about different CAN bus protocols, such as CANOpen, J1939, ISO14229, ISO14230.
  • Working knowledge of software development methodologies (V Model and functional safety).
  • Experience with various validation and verification techniques, including White/Grey/Black box testing.
  • Proficient in using electronic lab tools, such as spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, signal generators, and DC power supplies.
  • Comfortable working with serial tools, Bluetooth, and over-the-air diagnostics.
  • A good understanding of design verification processes (DVPSOR).
  • Capable of supporting and conducting cause and effect analysis, including risk assessments, FMEA, 8D, and Ishikawa/fishbone diagrams.
