The salary for this position is competitive and includes a market premium payment, with expectations for onsite presence a few days each week.


Role Responsibilities
This position can be fulfilled at various locations within our organization.

As a Lead Mechanical Systems Engineer, you will oversee the design, assessment, and implementation of magnet systems and associated thermal management solutions.

Your responsibilities will include planning, coordinating, and executing tasks related to the design and evaluation of magnet or cryogenic systems, either independently or by leading teams.

In this capacity, you will advocate for the use of effective processes and tools while contributing to their continuous improvement, providing technical guidance and expertise.

Your role will involve proposing, defining, and executing small-scale projects, as well as leading teams to deliver engineering solutions for fusion and experimental technologies in a collaborative environment.

We seek candidates with a strong engineering background, particularly those experienced in managing multidisciplinary teams and possessing a solid foundation in structural or thermal engineering, materials science, and manufacturing techniques.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead projects related to magnet and cryogenic systems, ensuring successful delivery from initial concept through detailed design and implementation.
  • Collaborate on project specifications and oversee the delivery of work packages within complex integrated systems, engaging with various disciplines.
  • Support project initiation, providing insights on procurement decisions, and assisting with budget and timeline management.
  • Ensure the timely completion of assigned tasks within defined specifications and budgets, managing technical scope and quality.
  • Coordinate technical activities and resources, applying systems engineering principles and adhering to relevant design standards and regulations.
  • Act as the primary technical liaison and/or project manager for projects valued up to £1 million, overseeing supplier equipment acceptance, installation, testing, and commissioning, while effectively communicating technical knowledge through various channels. Additionally, implement organizational and technical enhancements within the magnetic engineering domain, proactively sharing knowledge and mentoring junior engineers.
Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:
  • A relevant engineering degree or equivalent experience, with a strong background in engineering analysis and a solid understanding of engineering materials and their properties.
  • Experience in engineering related to one or more of the following areas:
  • Electromechanical systems, heat exchangers, electrical insulation, thermal isolation, composite materials, high vacuum systems, magnets (both resistive and superconducting), cryogenic systems.
  • Strong communication and technical writing skills, along with effective interpersonal abilities to foster positive working relationships.
  • Knowledge of specific environmental factors, including vacuum, radiation, and transient magnetic fields, and their implications on engineering work.
  • Experience guiding the delivery of technical design, manufacturing, and testing activities in a subcontracting environment.
Desirable Attributes
  • A willingness to pursue training and development opportunities, with the goal of achieving Professional Chartership with a relevant engineering or physics institution.
