About the Role

Sotheby's, the world's premier destination for art and luxury, is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to lead our Art Recovery Research team. As a key member of our international restitution team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the integrity and authenticity of our art offerings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the research function of the Art Recovery department, driving best practices and ensuring compliance with company policies.
  • Provide diligent research and support for Sotheby's worldwide on WWII era provenance issues, minimizing the risk of looted or displaced artworks being offered for sale.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with relevant lawyers, researchers, and government bodies in the art restitution field.
  • Generate incremental business through art recovery research and contacts, specifically with lawyers, heirs, museums, and researchers in the restitution field.
  • Collaborate with business development teams and expert departments to vet and research artworks, ensuring accurate provenance and authenticity.
  • Support clients in clearing the provenance of artworks for sale or appraisal, providing expert guidance and advice.
Requirements
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in art restitution and provenance research, business development, and client management.
  • Proven research, presentation, and communication skills, with the ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Fluency in German and/or French, with a strong understanding of art history and law.
  • Ability to travel internationally frequently, with a willingness to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
