Join our esteemed team at the University of Cambridge as we invite applications for two Research Associate roles within the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy.

  • These are fixed-term positions focused on pioneering characterisation methodologies for evaluating residual stresses in aerospace materials.
  • Engage in cutting-edge research on solid-state titanium welds and advanced additively manufactured superalloy frameworks.
  • Benefit from the mentorship of leading experts, including Prof. NG Jones, Prof. HJ Stone, and Dr. DM Collins.
  • Conduct in-depth microstructural analysis and real-time experiments at national radiation research facilities.
  • Collaborate with a network of industrial and academic professionals to enhance research outcomes.
  • Strong communication skills are essential for success in this role.

Candidate Qualifications:

  • A relevant degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Physics, or Chemistry is required.
  • A PhD in Metallurgy or Materials Science is essential.
  • Familiarity with titanium or nickel superalloy metallurgy is preferred.
  • Experience with electron microscopy, EBSD, and diffraction methodologies is advantageous.
  • Prior experience at neutron or synchrotron radiation facilities is a plus.
  • A solid understanding of residual stress evaluation techniques is necessary.
  • A proven track record of effective communication is expected.
  • Experience in industrial collaborations is beneficial.
