Location: Stratford, London with significant flexibility (expected in-office presence of 1-2 days per week)

This is a remarkable opportunity to assume a pivotal leadership position within the communications team at Cancer Research UK.

The Media Relations Lead will oversee and direct a cohesive press and media team, delivering high-caliber advice and media relations support across various divisions and organizations within the charity.

In collaboration with the Director of Communications, Chief Executive, and Executive Board, the role entails providing expert communications counsel regarding the advantages and potential risks associated with decisions and policies, utilizing sound judgment to shape strategies for announcements and urgent news.

During critical incidents, the Media Relations Lead will spearhead the media team, ensuring an expert crisis communications response.

The position requires leading the team to employ diverse media channels for executing intricate policy and operational communications strategies.

The role is accountable for transforming the press office into a unified, proactive news operation that engages national, regional, devolved, and international media, fostering a high-performing team culture.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provide strategic media management advice to senior leaders, ensuring that the charity's priorities are effectively communicated through proactive and strategic media engagement.
  2. Collaborate closely with the Director of Communications and relevant directors to guarantee that the Executive Board receives optimal media handling guidance.
  3. Design and implement a consolidated news function that integrates national, devolved, regional, and international media.
  4. Develop comprehensive media strategies to enhance public awareness of the charity's research impact and brand visibility.
  5. Drive the charity's commentary and opinion pieces, positioning it as a thought leader in health and science, maximizing outreach to both UK and international audiences.
  6. Work in tandem with the Communications Department leadership to ensure effective planning and scheduling of content that aligns with organizational priorities.
  7. Support the execution of the annual communications plan, maintaining proactive external media communications and participating in relevant leadership meetings.
  8. Represent the communications team at leadership forums, steering groups, and committees.
  9. Act as a visible leader and advocate for the communications team, embodying the charity's values and fostering diversity and talent within the team.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Extensive experience in a senior media role within a dynamic environment, demonstrating excellent news judgment and digital acumen.
  • A proven track record of building credibility and relationships at senior levels to provide strategic communications and reputation management advice.
  • Strong political and news awareness, with the ability to align communications strategies with organizational priorities.
  • Experience in managing a high-quality, proactive media management service, monitoring news across various platforms.
  • The capability to respond swiftly to evolving situations and provide senior cover during out-of-hours duties.
  • Expertise in crisis communications during critical incidents.
  • Experience in managing communications within a complex operational framework.
