London, Greater London, United Kingdom Barts Health NHS Trust Full time

We invite applications for a locum consultant position in the field of Virology within the Department of Infection at Barts Health NHS Trust. This role primarily operates from the Royal London Hospital (RLH) while encompassing responsibilities across all facilities within the Barts Health NHS Trust, as well as those affiliated with the East and South East London (ESEL) NHS Pathology Partnership. The successful applicant will collaborate with fellow consultants to deliver a comprehensive Virology service across all Barts Health locations and associated sites under service level agreements.

This locum position is ideal for consultants who are accredited in Medical Virology, as well as those possessing dual accreditation in Medical Virology and Infectious Diseases.

Key Responsibilities

This is a remarkable opportunity to engage with a dynamic team of Microbiologists, Virologists, and Infectious Diseases specialists, while working in a Trust that features an on-site diagnostic laboratory. The laboratory, situated at the Royal London Hospital, is part of the newly established East and South East London (ESEL) NHS Pathology Partnership, which includes Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust pathology services. The Virology and Microbiology laboratories are accredited by UKAS ISO 15189, providing a comprehensive array of high-quality routine and specialized microbiology and virology investigations for Barts Health and Trusts with service agreements.

About Barts Health NHS Trust

Barts Health is among the largest NHS trusts in the UK and a leading healthcare provider. The group of NHS hospitals is embarking on an exciting journey towards becoming an exemplary organization with a world-class clinical reputation. Having successfully moved out of special measures, we are now poised to enhance our services for patients continually.

This entails being a provider of exceptional patient safety, consistently achieving high standards of care, and ensuring that patients receive care in the appropriate setting at the right time. It also involves fostering an outstanding workplace culture, where our WeCare values are evident and guide our collaborative efforts.

We are dedicated to promoting inclusion, ensuring that every staff member feels a sense of belonging. We appreciate our diverse backgrounds and actively support an inclusive work environment.

Role Overview

The post holder will be integrated into the Department of Infection, joining a team of 15 permanent and 8 locum/honorary consultant colleagues across the Trust. The appointee is expected to contribute to the delivery of diagnostic, clinical, stewardship, and infection prevention and control services for patients, staff, and local general practitioners, while also engaging in departmental teaching activities, including training clinical scientists and specialist registrars in Medical Virology, Medical Microbiology, and Infectious Diseases.

This position includes a third-tier on-call commitment for Virology, primarily managed remotely. Depending on the candidate's experience and qualifications, there may be opportunities to participate in the Microbiology or Infectious Diseases on-call duties.

The workload for this position is approximately equivalent to a job plan of 8 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA), with final job planning to occur post-appointment.
