Position Overview

The University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated and HCPC registered Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Specialist Clinical Laboratory Scientist to become a vital part of our dynamic Haematology and Blood Transfusion teams within the Blood Sciences division.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate flexibility in their work approach to ensure continuous service delivery while contributing to technical excellence with a positive, detail-oriented, and professional demeanor.

Our facility holds full UKAS ISO15189:2012 accreditation and is in the process of transitioning to the 2022 standards. Additionally, we are recognized by the IBMS as a training laboratory for registration and specialist portfolios.

Key Responsibilities

The successful applicant will undergo training and competency evaluations to participate in our 24/7 shift system, which includes early, late, day, night, weekend, and holiday shifts. Therefore, the ability to work independently for extended periods as part of the 24/7 shift schedule is crucial.

The role encompasses, but is not limited to, the following tasks:

  • Processing and validating patient specimens analyzed on the Sysmex XN9000 line and CS5100 analyzers.
  • Reporting on blood film morphology.
  • Processing, validating, and cross-matching transfusion samples utilizing the IH100 analyzers and manual techniques.
  • Appropriately referring abnormal results to medical professionals.
  • Monitoring blood stocks and utilizing the Blood360 electronic tracking system.
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment.
  • Engaging in service development, including quality management activities and projects.
  • Exhibiting effective communication and teamwork.
  • Experience with our current equipment, Q-Pulse, and/or CliniSys WPE is advantageous, though comprehensive training will be provided.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • IBMS accredited BSc in biomedical sciences or equivalent.
  • IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Haematology & Transfusion (or equivalent) (Band 6).

Desirable:

  • Working towards IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Haematology & Transfusion (Band 5).
  • Working towards MSc or higher specialist diploma in biomedical sciences (Band 6).

Professional Registration

Essential:

  • HCPC Registered as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist.

Experience

Essential:

  • Demonstrable experience working in an NHS Blood Sciences Laboratory.
  • Demonstrable experience post HCPC registration in a clinical laboratory (band 6).

Desirable:

  • Demonstrable experience in an NHS Haematology and/or Blood Transfusion Laboratory (Band 5).
  • Experience with fully automated equipment (band 5 / 6).
  • Experience troubleshooting complex laboratory technical equipment (band 6).
  • Experience in training and supervising other staff members (Band 6).

Other Requirements

Essential:

  • Awareness of Quality Management System activities/ISO 15189.
  • Willingness to participate in a 24/7 service, including night shifts.
