Business Strategist for Global Fine Arts

Sotheby's London seeks a driven Business Director to spearhead financial success within our esteemed Global Fine Arts department.

As a vital member of the team, you will be entrusted with driving revenue growth, profitability, and strategic direction for this crucial business segment. Your role will involve collaborating closely with specialists across live and online auctions, as well as private sales, to ensure seamless execution and maximize financial performance.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Cultivate and manage a robust pipeline of business opportunities, fostering strong relationships with internal stakeholders to drive sales and accountability.
  • Lead the management and tracking of all auction and private sale consignments, ensuring alignment with annual goals. Present key insights and data to senior leadership, including the CFO, Heads of Departments, Specialists, and Relationship Managers.
  • Develop comprehensive financial models (revenue and expense) to support consignment proposals across all revenue streams. Exercise sound judgment in approving or escalating deals as needed.
  • Craft compelling client-facing deal communications and assume a client-facing role for commercial negotiations when required.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for negotiations involving consignments, vendors, consultants, and third parties. Collaborate with the Legal team to ensure all agreements are legally sound, under the guidance of senior Business Management where appropriate.
  • Act as a liaison between the legal department and clients regarding settlement of claims and goodwill gestures.
  • Lead annual budget planning and forecasting exercises in partnership with the Head of Sale, Head of Department, Finance, and other key management personnel. Seek guidance from senior Business Management when necessary.
  • Translate financial results and KPIs into actionable operational recommendations to optimize business performance.
  • Manage all sale and department expenses effectively, adhering to established guidelines and seeking oversight from senior Business Management as needed.
  • Collaborate with Operations and Finance teams to develop and implement strategies for managing Sotheby's inventory, ensuring optimal utilization and value.
  • Act as a client-facing resource and internal advocate to resolve escalated pre- and post-sale issues promptly and effectively.
  • Oversee Sale settlement processes in collaboration with Pre and Post-Sale teams, ensuring accurate Extended Payments approvals, accountability, and billing for non-standard transactions.
  • Serve as a strategic partner to senior management by conducting competitive analysis, maintaining market share reporting, and analyzing trends in deal making.
  • Identify potential new revenue streams and collaborate with key internal stakeholders to develop comprehensive business plans.
  • Work collaboratively to propose, manage, and implement efficiencies, integration, and adoption of new IT and digital improvements aligned with overall responsibilities.
