National Nature Reserve Warden – Aston Rowant NNR

Wallingford, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom Natural England Full time
Position Overview
This role is situated at Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve (NNR) within the Chilterns National Landscape.

About the Team
Are you passionate about the environment and nature? Do you aspire to make a significant impact and achieve substantial ecological benefits for both the present and future? If you thrive in a collaborative environment and enjoy advising communities and stakeholders to enhance the Natural Environment, this opportunity may be for you.

A career with Natural England provides fulfilling prospects to foster environmental advancements and contribute to a sustainable future for both people and nature.

Key Responsibilities of Natural England:

  • Developing a Nature Recovery Network to support wildlife
  • Assessing environmental changes to mitigate climate change impacts
  • Collaborating with agriculturalists and landowners to promote sustainable food production
  • Consulting on new development plans to optimize benefits for nature
  • Facilitating connections between people and nature, including green social prescribing initiatives

As the Government's advisor on the natural environment, we play a crucial role in executing the Government's 25 Year Environment Plan, an ambitious strategy that opens new avenues for protecting and enhancing our natural surroundings.

Benefits

Natural England strives to accommodate requests for flexible working arrangements, including both full-time and part-time hours, to support employees in achieving a healthy work/life balance.

We offer excellent career development opportunities, with tailored training and development programs. From initial onboarding to continuous learning, all staff members are encouraged to enhance their skills and competencies.

Employees are entitled to 10 days dedicated to personal learning and development, along with an additional 3 days for volunteering.

Our employees enjoy access to the Civil Service Pension scheme and various benefits, including generous leave allowances (33 days per year pro rata) and flexible working options to promote a balanced lifestyle.

Additional perks include discounts on shopping vouchers, a cycle-to-work scheme, and childcare vouchers.

Employees can also participate in the Civil Service Sports Club, which offers discounts on a variety of sports and leisure activities, as well as social events.

Natural England is a wonderful workplace that values diversity and inclusion.

We are committed to fairness and equality, ensuring that every individual feels appreciated for their unique contributions.

Our core values foster collaboration to benefit the communities we serve, and our vibrant employee-led diversity networks enhance our inclusive culture and support our Diversity Action Plan.

Work Locations

Natural England embraces hybrid working, allowing staff to operate from a variety of locations, including home, offices (ours and those of our partners), and relevant sites.

All new employees will be formally associated with one of our 25 offices across England, with the expectation that they can access their local office to engage with the community of staff in their area.

Staff members are required to fulfill their duties in this manner and cannot work from overseas at any time.

Travel expenses will be reimbursed for work-related travel, but this does not cover travel between home and the designated office.

Job Responsibilities

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of Natural England's National Nature Reserves (NNR) team within the Thames Solent area.

NNRs serve an increasingly vital function as spaces where individuals can engage with nature and contribute to ecological recovery in the surrounding landscape.

Aston Rowant NNR, spanning 160 hectares, is one of the largest remaining chalk grassland areas in Oxfordshire, featuring extensive habitats of beech woodland and lowland scrub/grassland mosaic, supporting a variety of rare bird species and invertebrates. The reserve is highly frequented, drawing numerous visitors.

Effectively managing recreational pressures and the annual risk of wildfires is a critical aspect of this role, as is the ability to collaborate with local communities, visitors, volunteers, and partners.

Aston Rowant NNR is situated within a broader landscape of the Chilterns Hills National Landscape and is a key site for the nature recovery network.

Natural England's nature recovery initiatives focus on fostering closer collaboration with a diverse array of partners to achieve greater outcomes for nature and communities.

The role demands a blend of technical and practical land management expertise, along with a comprehensive understanding of the ecology and management of relevant habitats.

The ideal candidate will be a self-driven, adaptable, and organized individual with a genuine interest and experience in:

  • Collaborative partnerships
  • Practical conservation management
  • Delivering an enriching visitor experience
  • Utilizing evidence to guide nature conservation efforts
  • Upholding the highest health and safety standards
  • Team collaboration
  • Effective governance, record management, and information handling
