Role Overview: We are looking for two Lead Field Technicians to be integral members of our dynamic, multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers. You will play a crucial role in spearheading and executing a groundbreaking Floods and Droughts Research Infrastructure (FDRI) initiative, which has secured a substantial investment aimed at advancing hydrological science and infrastructure across the nation. This project is pivotal in enhancing the country's resilience to floods and droughts.

This role is an excellent opportunity for individuals with a robust understanding of environmental monitoring sensor systems, as you will lead a team in the development and deployment of advanced sensors and instrumentation across various field locations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Mentor and train technicians within the team
  • Collaborate with lead scientists to innovate new environmental monitoring sensor systems
  • Design, wire, program, test, and deploy new systems
  • Oversee maintenance visits for automated field instrument systems
  • Conduct site visits for installations, training, troubleshooting, and decommissioning
  • Manage mobile instrumentation and oversee temporary deployments
  • Procure parts and ready-made systems
  • Enhance data capture and quality, reducing operational costs and minimizing data gaps
  • Stay updated with emerging technologies and best practices for sensor networks
  • Document working procedures, calibrations, and inventory

This position requires a collaborative spirit and the ability to adapt to a variable workload. You will work closely with experts from various fields, including scientists and workshop technicians, while guiding junior field technicians. This role demands resourcefulness and a passion for innovation and problem-solving.

Qualifications:

  • A technical qualification at BTEC level or degree (or equivalent experience)
  • A comprehensive understanding of field data logger hardware and environmental field sensors
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and wiring diagrams
  • Experience in programming data loggers and interfacing sensors
  • Knowledge of safe fieldwork practices in remote environments
  • A full driving license and willingness to travel for field site visits

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in an environmental, academic, or research setting
  • Programming skills in R or Python
  • Knowledge of sensor networking and telemetry systems
  • Familiarity with quality management systems
