Role Overview: Are you technically inquisitive, enjoy solving problems, and excited about implementing innovative engineering solutions to support environmental science? We are looking for two Lead Field Technicians to join our dynamic and multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers, playing a crucial role in the flagship Floods and Droughts Research Infrastructure (FDRI) project. This groundbreaking initiative has secured substantial investment aimed at enhancing the nation's capacity to adapt to and manage floods and droughts.
This position offers a unique opportunity for individuals with a solid understanding of environmental monitoring sensor systems to lead a team in developing and deploying advanced sensors and instrumentation across various field locations nationwide.
Key Responsibilities:
- Train and mentor team technicians
- Collaborate with lead scientists to create new environmental monitoring sensor systems
- Construct, wire, program, test, and deploy new systems
- Oversee maintenance visits for automated field instrument systems
- Conduct field site visits for installations, training, fault resolution, and decommissioning
- Manage mobile instrumentation and oversee temporary deployments
- Procure parts and ready-made systems
- Enhance data capture and quality performance while minimizing operational costs
- Stay updated on emerging technologies and best practices for sensor networks
- Document working procedures, calibrations, and inventory
This role is highly collaborative and suited for someone who thrives in a variable workload environment, demonstrating resourcefulness and a passion for innovation and problem-solving. You will work closely with experts from various fields, including scientists and workshop technicians, while guiding junior field technicians.
Qualifications:
- A technical qualification at BTEC level or degree (or equivalent work experience)
- A broad understanding of field data logger hardware and environmental field sensors
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and wiring diagrams
- Experience programming data loggers and interfacing sensors
- Knowledge of safe fieldwork practices in remote environments
- A full driving license and willingness to travel for field site visits
Desirable Skills:
- Experience in an environmental, academic, scientific, or research setting
- Programming skills in R or Python
- Familiarity with sensor networking and telemetry systems
- Knowledge of quality management systems
