Role and Team Dynamics

The Strategic Risk Lead is a pivotal and multifaceted position that demands a diverse range of skills and competencies. The successful candidate will significantly contribute to shaping and executing the strategic goals of the Risk Team, enhancing risk capabilities throughout the organization.

The Risk Team is responsible for equipping the Department with the methodologies, tools, expertise, and support necessary for effective risk-based regulation of non-compliant products, which are often intricate and novel. Externally, we ensure the UK’s system for identifying, assessing, and managing consumer product risks operates efficiently, intervening when necessary to enhance the system. Our team is driven by scientific evidence, and if you have a strong interest in product safety, construction products, connected devices, or environmental impacts, and enjoy problem-solving, this role will be particularly appealing.

As the Strategic Risk Lead, you will oversee the execution of critical work streams and projects. You will collaborate with various teams across the Department and engage in some of our most prominent initiatives and challenges. You may also serve as a deputy for the functional team leader and provide support across the Risk Team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the execution of key risk work streams and projects, serving as the principal lead for sector-related activities and developing risk-based capabilities.
  • Act as a primary source of expertise within the Department on product risk, utilizing established methodologies and leading the development of new approaches as necessary.
  • Implement a program of effective risk-based strategies across the Department’s responsibilities, including designing training programs and fostering cross-Department expertise in risk management.
  • Oversee the information and knowledge requirements to achieve effective risk-based outcomes, identifying evidence gaps and research needs, and collaborating with relevant teams to address these.
  • Ensure adherence to quality assurance, monitoring, and evaluation principles concerning Risk Team activities, implementing processes to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Lead initiatives on behalf of the Department as a regulatory authority in delivering effective risk-based approaches and best practices for other product safety regulators.
  • Maintain key stakeholder relationships within industry, international regulators, and other governmental departments to support Team and Department objectives.
  • Collaborate closely with internal colleagues, particularly in the Targeting and Enforcement Directorates, to assess emerging issues and provide guidance.
  • Take a lead role in reactive work as it arises, including serving as the principal risk lead during incidents.
  • Manage line and/or matrix responsibilities as required.

Skills & Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Strong understanding of product risk and relevant risk assessment methodologies.
  • Exceptional research and report writing skills, with the ability to analyze complex datasets and make informed recommendations amidst uncertainty.
  • Capability to comprehend and apply technical information across diverse sectors to resolve complex issues, including emerging challenges.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, with a willingness to challenge the status quo and influence outcomes.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and maintain constructive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication, influencing, and interpersonal skills.

Desirable Criteria

  • Interest in behavioral decision science and/or risk and probability theory.
  • Experience in a regulatory environment.
  • Solid understanding of risk management principles.
