BAE Systems is seeking a skilled and dedicated Fabricator – Plater to join our growing shipbuilding team. In this role, you will play a vital part in the construction of high-quality vessels by fabricating, assembling, and installing various ship components.

As a key member of our production team, you will work with precision and attention to detail, ensuring that all structures meet stringent industry standards. Your expertise in interpreting engineering drawings and utilizing fabrication techniques will be essential in delivering exceptional results.

Responsibilities:
  • Accurately interpret and translate engineering blueprints into tangible ship components.
  • Prepare materials for fabrication using methods such as oxy-fuel gas cutting, hand grinding, drilling, and lock fitting.
  • Assemble and join various ship structures, including shells, decks, bulkheads, frames, and longitudinals, ensuring precise fit and alignment.
  • Utilize welding techniques to secure steelwork components, employing fairing aids for optimal results.
  • Fabricate a range of ship-specific items such as seats, ladders, false flooring, and panels.
  • Install outfitting components, including hatches, watertight doors, equipment seats, and false flooring.
  • Employ machine tools like rolling, flanging, and cutting machines (guillotine, cropper, mechanical saw) to shape materials effectively.
  • Contribute to the preparation of ships for float-off and sea trials.
Requirements:
  • Possess formal trade papers, such as a modern apprenticeship certification, demonstrating your expertise in fabrication.
  • Demonstrate current knowledge and practical experience in various fabrication techniques.
  • Exhibit a clear understanding of safety protocols and risk awareness within a shipbuilding environment.
  • Comprehend manufacturing processes and their application in shipbuilding.
  • Be comfortable working in confined spaces and at heights, adhering to all relevant safety regulations.
  • Hold valid safety certifications, including SHE induction, COSHH awareness, and working at height training.
  • Have a background working within a large-scale construction or manufacturing setting.
