Position Overview

An exceptional opportunity has emerged for a Community Midwifery Specialist to become a vital part of our dedicated team. We are currently seeking qualified individuals to enhance our community midwifery services.

Our community midwifery team provides comprehensive care to a diverse population of women and families, ensuring the delivery of high-quality midwifery services. The team operates under a named midwife model, collaborating within GP practices, children's centers, and home settings. The service is overseen by a Community Matron, and each team consists of a Team Leader, Community Midwives, Maternity Support Workers, and Community Administrators. Successful candidates will receive robust support and a tailored orientation upon joining.

Our midwives engage in a variety of shift patterns, including weekends, bank holidays, and an on-call rota to assist women who opt for home births and utilize the Birth Centre.

Key Responsibilities

The role involves:

  • Assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating midwifery care with a holistic and innovative approach, ensuring care plans are centered around the needs of women and are evidence-based.
  • Providing support, supervision, and education to junior staff, students, and support workers on relevant clinical and non-clinical procedures.
  • Acting as a practice assessor and mentor for students as necessary.
  • Competently performing and maintaining essential clinical procedures.
  • Utilizing clinical equipment effectively, with relevant training as required.
  • Communicating and collaborating efficiently with the wider healthcare team.
  • Prioritizing workload effectively.
  • Participating in the on-call rota to support women choosing home births and utilizing the Birth Centre.
  • Leading care and support for women requesting home births.
  • Employing advanced physical skills for procedures such as suturing in both home and hospital environments.
  • Engaging in Clinical Governance by reporting serious incidents and actively contributing to service development.
  • Participating in educational programs for parents within both hospital and community settings.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Registered Midwife on the NMC register
  • Diploma/BSc in Midwifery Studies

Desirable:

  • Examination of the Newborn (NIPE)
  • Mentor/assessor training or willingness to pursue
  • Newborn Life Support Training

Experience

Essential:

  • Experience in various settings utilizing all midwifery skills
  • Understanding of child protection processes and the mental health act
  • Knowledge of current and emerging healthcare issues
  • Experience caring for at-risk or socially excluded service users

Desirable:

  • Experience in attending home births

Additional Criteria

Essential:

  • Ability to prioritize personal workload
  • Demonstrates strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the department
  • Empathetic communication with women and their families regarding treatment and procedures
  • Full UK/EU driving license
