Clinical Coder

We are seeking a skilled Clinical Coder to join our team at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. As a Clinical Coder, you will play a vital role in ensuring the accuracy and completeness of patient data, which is essential for providing high-quality patient care and informing healthcare decisions.
Key Responsibilities- Assign codes from the International Classification of Diseases (ICD10), Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (OPCS4) and SNOMED applying National and International rules to agreed standards.
- Inputting of coded data onto the Patient Administration System (PAS) for all Inpatient, Day Case and Waiting List episodes.
- Use a basic level of knowledge in medical terminology and anatomy & physiology when making judgements in translating information where clinical description does not map to an exact code applying UK clinical coding classification conventions.
- Use judgement based on knowledge acquired through National Standards and work-based training to translate cases where the information provided is not readily easy to code and to seek help from senior members of staff and liaise with clinical leads for these types of coding queries.
- Demonstrates knowledge of medical terminology.
- Working on own initiative within standard departmental procedures and managing day-to-day workloads, referring more complex issues to more senior colleagues.
- Ensuring that coding is carried out in an accurate, timely and complete manner to meet the Trusts 10 day deadline for statutory information requirements and financial flows.
- To meet the throughput and deadlines allocated by the coding managers operating mainly on own initiative but referring more complex analysis to more experienced coding staff or managers.
- 5 GCSE or equivalent to include Mathematics / English.
- NVQ Level 3.
- Computer literate with experience of applying this in the work environment.
- General administerial office experience.
- A-levels including English and/or Mathematics and/or a science subject or equivalent.
- IT Qualification ECDL, ITIL.
- Degree/Graduate status.
- Experience using PAS / Patient centre or other medical systems used in the NHS.
- Experience using HIS or equivalent or knowledge of electronic patient records.
- Keyboard skills.
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Be committed and responsible to designated duties.
- Good verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prioritise work.
- Ability to work under pressure to meet strict deadlines.
- Microsoft Office suite including Outlook.
- Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
- Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation.
- Flexible approach to work as you will be required to travel independently and work at other sites.
- Ability to work flexible hours.
- Post holder will need to use a VDU for a substantial proportion of the working day.
- Training / development - Post holder Must embark on workshops to enhance skills.
