Clinical Coder Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled Clinical Coder Specialist to join our team at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. As a key member of our coding team, you will be responsible for reviewing medical information from patient records and other electronic systems, and applying clinical/medically coded classifications in accordance with NHS England's standards.
Main Responsibilities- Assign codes from the International Classification of Diseases (ICD10), Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (OPCS4) and SNOMED applying National and International rules to agreed standards.
- Inputting of coded data onto the Patient Administration System (PAS) for all Inpatient, Day Case and Waiting List episodes.
- Use a basic level of knowledge in medical terminology and anatomy & physiology when making judgements in translating information where clinical description does not map to an exact code applying UK clinical coding classification conventions.
- Use judgement based on knowledge acquired through National Standards and work-based training to translate cases where the information provided is not readily easy to code and to seek help from senior members of staff and liaise with clinical leads for these types of coding queries.
- Demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology.
- Work on own initiative within standard departmental procedures and manage day-to-day workloads, referring more complex issues to more senior colleagues.
- Ensure that coding is carried out in an accurate, timely and complete manner to meet the Trust's 10 day deadline for statutory information requirements and financial flows.
- Meet the throughput and deadlines allocated by the coding managers operating mainly on own initiative but referring more complex analysis to more experienced coding staff or managers.
Qualifications
- 5 GCSE or equivalent to include Mathematics/English.
- NVQ Level 3.
Desirable
- A-levels including English and/or Mathematics and/or a science subject or equivalent.
- IT Qualification ECDL, ITIL.
- Degree/Graduate status.
Experience
- Computer literate with experience of applying this in the work environment.
- General administrative office experience.
Skills
- Keyboard skills.
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Be committed and responsible to designated duties.
- Good verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prioritise work.
- Ability to work under pressure to meet strict deadlines.
- Microsoft Office suite including Outlook.
- Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
Knowledge
- Knowledge of anatomy & health issues and medical terminology.
Additional
- Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation.
- Flexible approach to work as you will be required to travel independently and work at other sites.
- Ability to work flexible hours.
- Post holder will need to use a VDU for a substantial proportion of the working day.
- Training/development - Post holder Must embark on workshops to enhance skills.
