Job Overview

The Manual Handling Specialist serves as the primary source of expert guidance for Managers and Staff, delivering a thorough array of policies, procedures, training, and support to ensure safe handling practices are implemented throughout the organization, both within healthcare facilities and community services.

Our approach to manual handling safety is centered around a network of Manual Handling Champions who facilitate training and promote safe practices in their respective areas. The Specialist's role is to foster and sustain strong relationships while enhancing the confidence and skills of these Champions.

Main Responsibilities

This position provides expert advice on back care, manual handling, and ergonomics to personnel at all levels, aiming to reduce risks to employees, caregivers, and clients. The Specialist will:

  • Develop, implement, and deliver training to embed the Manual Handling policies and protocols.
  • Identify and interpret statutory requirements and best practices related to manual handling and ergonomics, ensuring compliance across the organization.
  • Build strong partnerships with clinical and operational managers and staff across various departments, particularly with Manual Handling Champions, to support their development in delivering essential training.
  • Ensure that Manual Handling Champions maintain accurate and up-to-date training records.
  • Encourage enthusiasm and commitment to training within wards and departments to ensure ongoing participation.
  • Conduct audits of manual handling activities and the effective application of the Manual Handling policy and supporting procedures.
  • Analyze training data and incident reports to identify areas requiring attention.
  • Contribute to national or regional survey requests as needed.
  • Report any identified risks to the Deputy Head of Health, Safety, and Risk, proposing improvements where necessary.
  • Deliver a variety of training courses on manual and patient handling to diverse groups, ensuring flexibility to accommodate all shifts.
  • Assess the competence of staff attending training sessions and provide guidance on patient-specific handling situations.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge on current evidence and techniques in manual handling and ergonomics.
  • Participate as an integral member of the Health, Safety, and Risk Team, contributing to all divisional and departmental objectives.
  • Seek opportunities for service development and income generation while engaging in direct patient interactions during specialized assessments.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • A degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience.
  • Safer People Handling Qualification - Level 3 ROSPA or equivalent, or a commitment to obtain it within the first three months.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in manual handling theory and practice, particularly in patient settings.
  • Excellent training and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational and self-management abilities.
  • Flexibility to work occasional weekends or evenings as required.
  • Ability to travel efficiently across multiple sites and transport manual handling equipment as necessary.
