Job Overview

The Manual Handling Specialist serves as the primary source of expert guidance for Managers and Staff, offering a wide array of policies, procedures, training, and support to ensure safe handling practices are implemented throughout the organization, both within healthcare facilities and community services.

Our approach to manual handling safety is centered around a network of Manual Handling Champions who facilitate training and promote safe practices in their respective areas. The Specialist's role is to foster and sustain strong relationships while enhancing the confidence and competence of these Champions.

Key Responsibilities

This position provides specialized guidance on back care, manual handling, and ergonomics to personnel at all levels, aiming to reduce risks to employees, caregivers, and clients. The Specialist will develop, implement, and deliver training to integrate the Manual Handling policies and protocols effectively. Key responsibilities include:

  • Identifying and interpreting statutory requirements and best practices related to manual handling and ergonomics, ensuring their integration into organizational policy.
  • Building strong relationships with clinical and operational managers and staff across various departments, particularly with Manual Handling Champions, to support their training delivery.
  • Ensuring that Manual Handling Champions maintain accurate and up-to-date training records.
  • Encouraging enthusiasm and commitment within departments to promote ongoing training participation.
  • Delivering training to identified staff groups in accordance with organizational needs and requirements.
  • Conducting audits of manual handling activities and the effective application of the Manual Handling policy and associated procedures.
  • Analyzing training data and incident reports to identify areas requiring attention.
  • Contributing to national or regional survey requests as needed.
  • Reporting any identified risks to the Deputy Head of Health, Safety, and Risk, along with recommendations for improvement.
  • Designing and delivering a variety of training courses for manual and patient handling to diverse groups, ensuring flexibility in scheduling to accommodate all shifts.
  • Assessing the competence of staff attending training sessions.
  • Providing tailored advice to staff in patient-specific scenarios, ensuring respect for the dignity and comfort of all individuals involved.
  • Conducting timely investigations into accidents and incidents, ensuring that action plans from audits are executed promptly.
  • Staying current with developments in ergonomics and manual handling, including related areas such as ligature management and the proper use of equipment.
  • Actively seeking opportunities for service enhancement and income generation.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • A degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience.
  • Safer People Handling Qualification - Level 3 ROSPA or equivalent, or a commitment to obtain this within the first three months.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in manual handling theory and practice, particularly in a patient care setting.
  • Excellent training and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational and self-management abilities.
  • Flexibility to accommodate occasional weekend or evening work as needed.
  • Ability to travel efficiently across multiple sites.
  • Physical capability to maneuver and transport manual handling equipment as required.

This role is integral to the Health, Safety, and Risk Team, contributing to the overall governance and operational standards of the organization.
