Position Overview
Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking to recruit two Consultant Neurosurgeons with a focus on spinal and functional Neurosurgery. This is a remarkable opportunity to become part of a distinguished team dedicated to innovation, research, and delivering high-quality patient care and outcomes.
This role is a full-time position comprising 10 Programmed Activities (PAs).
The department will assist successful candidates in achieving specialist registration through the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) if they meet the eligibility criteria.
The selected candidates will be tasked with providing designated services within their areas of expertise. They will collaborate with the consultant team to deliver neurosurgery services and will take a leadership role in the VIRTUAL ward initiative.
The Trust ensures that all surgeons undergo an annual appraisal with a qualified appraiser and provides support for those navigating the revalidation process. Additionally, the department is committed to helping specialists identify suitable mentors.
Key Responsibilities
- Uphold the highest clinical standards in patient management.
- Lead the VIRTUAL ward initiative.
- Support spinal and functional neurosurgery services within the department, including a weekly elective theatre list and clinic.
- Provide teaching and training to junior medical staff.
- Actively engage in departmental and Trust-wide Clinical Governance and audit activities.
- Ensure participation in continuing professional development (CPD).

Qualifications and Experience
Essential Qualifications
- Full GMC registration with a license to practice at the time of appointment.
- MBBS degree.
- MRCS/FRCS (UK) qualification.
Desirable Qualifications
- Intercollegiate Fellowship Examination in Neurosurgery.
Essential Experience
- A minimum of 12 years of postgraduate experience, with at least six years in the specialty.
- Ability to clinically assess and manage patients, independently formulating prioritized differential diagnoses and initiating appropriate management plans.
- Capability to handle complexity and uncertainty in patient care as a senior autonomous practitioner, making informed decisions and utilizing significant clinical expertise as necessary.
Desirable Experience
- Technical proficiency in Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS), Intrathecal Baclofen (ITB), and non-specialized neurosurgical spine trauma.
Communication and Relationship Skills
Essential Skills
- All applicants must demonstrate proficiency in written and spoken English, evidenced by a minimum level B in all elements of the Occupational English Test or an overall score of 7 in the IELTS test, with no individual component scoring below 7.
