Senior Electrical Systems Engineer

Role Overview

We are in search of a skilled Electrical Systems Engineer who is adaptable (with potential travel to various Terminal and Pipeline Network Sites) and will report directly to the Engineering Manager for the UK & IRE. As the Technical Authority for electrical systems and apparatus, the ideal candidate will identify, evaluate, and effectively manage risks to ensure safe operations, while providing technical expertise, leadership, and support to projects, operations, and maintenance teams. This position entails overseeing plant modifications and developing designs and specifications for new electrical systems and apparatus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with relevant electrical engineering codes and standards, managing any deviations appropriately.

The electrical equipment on-site includes: Power Transformers, HV/LV Switchgear (Air, Vacuum, and Oil), HV/LV distribution systems, ATEX and FLP Motors, Motor Starters, HV/LV Variable Speed Drives, Soft Starters, Uninterruptible Power Supplies, Hazardous Area Cabling/Containment/Junction Boxes, and Earthing and Bonding Systems.

Oversee the performance standards for all electrical systems and equipment. Act as the designated Electrical Competent Person in accordance with Electricity at Work Regulations. Provide assurance to the Engineering Manager for the UK & IRE that the Management of Change (MOC) process is implemented correctly. Lead the identification and scoping of projects and modifications to plant systems. Prioritize equipment for replacement based on maintenance records and known conditions, preparing cost estimates and business case proposals for electrical equipment/system capital expenditures. Manage vendor relationships and tender processes, including addressing vendor inquiries and participating in technical bid evaluations and Factory Acceptance Tests. Maintain a working knowledge of relevant Regulations and Directives: DSEAR (ATEX), EWR, EER, Machinery Directive, PUWER, COMAH, and CDM. Possess a working knowledge of applicable standards: BS 7671 and BS EN 60079. Have prior experience in Major Accident Hazard (MAH) environments. Adhere to standards, procedures, and work instructions for Safety Critical Tasks to meet COMAH requirements, with ongoing competency assessments as part of this role.

Candidate Profile

The successful applicant will hold a relevant degree in Electrical Engineering, CompEx Design (Ex12), parts A & B. Chartered status or progress towards chartership is preferred, along with substantial experience in electrical system design, including load lists, Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), cable sizing, fault level analysis, protection grading studies, and motor starting calculations. Experience with lightning protection calculations and the specification of equipment for installation in hazardous areas is essential, as is experience in Risk Assessment, Site Commissioning, and Troubleshooting. Previous experience as a designated competent person under Electricity at Work Regulations is required.

To excel in this role, candidates must possess a solid understanding of current legislation: DSEAR (ATEX), EWR, EER, Machinery Directive, PUWER, COMAH, and CDM. Familiarity with applicable codes and standards such as BS 7671 and BS EN 60079, along with an awareness of emerging technologies, is crucial. The ability to innovate and collaborate effectively within a team is essential.

Experience in a COMAH-regulated industry, managing aging assets, mentoring site electricians, and involvement with design houses/EPC/EPCm Contractors, as well as participation in technical standards committees, is advantageous.
