Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Health Play Specialist to join our team at Great Ormond Street Hospital. As a key member of our Play Team, you will play a vital role in providing therapeutic play interventions to children and young people in hospital, helping to alleviate their anxieties and fears, and promoting their well-being and positive experience.

The successful candidate will have a strong theoretical knowledge and understanding of therapeutic play and child development, as well as the ability to work with and provide creative activities to individual and groups of children and adolescents. You will be responsible for undertaking therapeutic assessments, devising play programmes, and monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions.

Main Responsibilities
  • To undertake therapeutic assessments and devise play programmes for children and young people in hospital, according to their individual needs and as part of the overall care plan.
  • To plan and implement individual therapeutic play programmes to include preparation for invasive and non-invasive procedures, distraction therapy, and post-procedural play.
  • To monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions using reflective practice to achieve best outcomes.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will have a strong academic background in Health Care Play Specialism or a related field, with a registered Society of Health Play Specialists (SoHPS) or Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) qualification. They will also have a basic knowledge of health legislation and SoHPS guidelines for professional practice, as well as the ability to reflect and adhere to professional boundaries.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the value of play for sick children, knowledge of current best practice, and the ability to work effectively with children and young people in hospital. They will also have good organisation skills, effective verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work as part of a team.
