Job Summary:

Essex County Council is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Property Solicitor to join our team on a temporary basis. As a Property Solicitor, you will be responsible for providing a cost-effective and high-quality legal service to the Council and external clients in relation to property law, commercial, and associated matters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct a caseload of property matters and a mix of other matters in one or more of the other areas of legal work undertaken by the Council.
  • Undertake research to assist other lawyers in the team to provide advice to the Council in the areas of property law specifically and local government law generally.
  • Provide timely responses to legal instructions to ensure they meet agreed performance targets.
  • Act as the Council's negotiator on the legal aspects of property transactions.
  • Draft leases, overage agreements, wayleaves, licences, contracts for property disposal/development, and deal with all matters ancillary thereto.
  • Have conduct of matters relating to assets of community value, charitable trusts, and property trust work generally.
  • Develop performance standards and achieve external accreditation.
  • Ensure that the Council's Officers and Members are apprised of changes in the law in the areas of responsibility.
  • Advocate in contested cases in the Magistrates or County Court or represent in property dispute arbitration.

Requirements:

  • Substantial experience in effective handling of a caseload relating to property work, including leasehold and freehold transactions, Development Agreements, Overage Agreements, Deed of Easements, Licences for works, assignments, and underlettings.
  • Substantial experience in drafting agreements and dealing with complex legal matters.
  • Substantial experience in the research and giving of advice and undertaking transactions or case work in matters relating to property.
  • Experience of drafting complex and substantial documentation, including reports, policies, and procedures.
  • IT proficiency in Microsoft Office, online legal libraries, and general case management systems.
  • Fluent English language skills, both spoken and written.
