Our Estates division is seeking a dedicated and adaptable Mechanical Technician to enhance our team at Bedford Hospital. Responsibilities will encompass both preventive and corrective maintenance across a diverse array of building services and equipment. Participation in the on-call rota and the willingness to work additional hours are vital components of this position. Please be aware that residing within a 15-mile radius of the facility is a requirement due to on-call obligations.

The Maintenance department, which includes electrical, mechanical, and building trades, is accountable for the upkeep of the Trust's facilities and assets. Our focus is on delivering exceptional service, with teamwork, respect, and integrity as our foundational values.

While we provide extensive learning and development opportunities, it is essential that you possess relevant skills and experience to ensure your success with us. Key qualifications include:

  • Completion of a mechanical fitter or plumbing apprenticeship, or equivalent experience
  • Possession of a recognized qualification in a relevant mechanical field
  • Extensive experience in maintenance or service sectors

Main Responsibilities

Your role will involve contributing to a comprehensive and responsive maintenance service for all Trust properties. This includes diagnosing and rectifying faults, as well as maintaining building engineering services, plant, and equipment through the application of your craft skills.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Identifying, diagnosing, and repairing faults, along with performing planned maintenance on mechanical services, plant, and equipment.
  • Executing reactive and planned maintenance tasks related to your core skills.
  • Fabricating, assembling, erecting, installing, and commissioning new work associated with your expertise.
  • Collaborating with team members on tasks requiring additional skills.
  • Liaising with clinical staff to schedule equipment and plant maintenance.
  • Conducting periodic checks, servicing, and testing of equipment in line with maintenance schedules.
  • Supervising Maintenance Assistants on a day-to-day basis.
  • Adhering to all safety procedures and the Trust's Health and Safety policies.
  • Participating in on-call arrangements to provide 24-hour cover.

Qualifications

Essential

  • NVQ Level 3, C&G, or equivalent in a relevant mechanical discipline.
  • Recognized mechanical apprenticeship or equivalent qualification and experience.

Desirable

  • IOSH Working Safely certification.

Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in a service and/or maintenance role.
  • Capability to perform a broad range of mechanical maintenance tasks.

Desirable

  • Experience in maintaining healthcare building services and equipment.
  • Experience with on-call responsibilities.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Proficient in the safe use of tools and equipment necessary for the role.
  • Competent computer skills.
  • Good understanding of health and safety legislation and safe working practices.

Desirable

  • In-depth knowledge of building services engineering.
  • Basic electrical skills.
  • Awareness of water quality management.
