Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated and adaptable Mechanical Maintenance Specialist to join our Estates Team. This role is essential in ensuring the smooth operation of our facilities and meeting the objectives of both the department and the Trust.

The successful candidate will support the Estates Directorate in delivering a comprehensive and responsive Estate Management Service across all Trust properties.

As a highly skilled maintenance technician, you will be responsible for a variety of tasks associated with your core mechanical trade.

Key Responsibilities

  • Diagnose issues, perform repairs, and maintain building engineering services, plant, and equipment.
  • Ensure safe isolations within your specialized skill set.
  • Supervise others in troubleshooting, repairs, maintenance, and installation of complex systems and equipment.
  • Perform Authorised Person duties as required.
  • This position will primarily be based at our hospital facilities, covering services across various sites.
  • Work hours are Monday to Friday, with participation in an on-call rota for emergency situations, including some weekend and evening responsibilities.

Job Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • Work independently to complete projects as directed by Estates Managers and Officers.
  • Conduct testing, servicing, and maintenance of various equipment, including medical gas systems and gas boilers.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve complex issues within building engineering services, such as fire alarms and building management systems.
  • Fabricate, assemble, install, and commission new equipment as needed.
  • Perform regular checks, servicing, and testing of plant and equipment according to maintenance schedules.
  • Monitor and ensure the efficient operation of plant and equipment by servicing and logging performance data.
  • Be prepared to lift and handle heavy objects, utilize access equipment, and work in confined spaces.
  • Analyze fault alarms from the building management and fire alarm systems, investigating and rectifying all issues.
  • Adhere to Health and Safety Executive procedures and the Trust's health and safety policies.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork for departmental operations.
  • Participate in training programs to enhance skills and knowledge relevant to the technician role.
  • Engage in on-call arrangements as necessary to ensure service delivery.
  • Work in accordance with all relevant Trust policies and procedures.
  • Be a proactive team member who demonstrates initiative and flexibility to meet client needs.
  • Commit to ongoing training to acquire new skills for departmental requirements.
  • Understand the operational practices of the Estates Maintenance Department.
  • Become familiar with the complex operations of plant and equipment across the Trust to effectively troubleshoot and repair.

Qualifications

Essential

  • HNC/D, NVQ level 4, C&G, or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Time-served mechanical technician.

Desirable

  • IOSH Working Safely certification.

Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrated experience in a service or maintenance role.
  • Proven supervisory experience.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Strong understanding of Health & Safety procedures.

Desirable

  • In-depth knowledge of building services engineering.
  • Familiarity with Building Management Systems.
  • Understanding of steam raising plant, particularly steam generators.
