Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated and adaptable Mechanical Maintenance Specialist to join our Estates Team. This role is crucial in ensuring the efficient operation of our facilities and will involve a hands-on approach to maintenance tasks.

The successful candidate will support the Estates Directorate in delivering a comprehensive Estate Management Service across the Trust's facilities.

You will be a skilled multi-disciplinary technician, proficient in executing a variety of responsibilities related to your core trade.

Key Responsibilities

  • Diagnose issues, perform repairs, and maintain the building engineering services, machinery, and equipment.
  • Ensure safe isolations within your area of expertise.
  • Supervise others in troubleshooting, repairs, maintenance, and installation of complex systems and infrastructure.
  • Perform duties as an Authorised Person.
  • This role will primarily operate within the Trust's facilities.
  • Standard working hours are Monday to Friday, with participation in an on-call rota for emergency situations, including occasional weekend and evening duties.

Job Duties

Core Responsibilities

  • Utilize initiative to complete projects as directed by the Estates Managers & Officers.
  • Conduct testing, servicing, and maintenance of various equipment, including decontamination systems, medical gas systems, and boilers.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve complex issues within the building engineering services, including fire alarms and building management systems.
  • Fabricate, assemble, install, and commission new equipment as required.
  • Perform regular checks, servicing, and testing of machinery in line with maintenance schedules.
  • Monitor and ensure the effective operation of equipment by adjusting and logging performance data.
  • This position involves lifting heavy objects, using access equipment, and working in confined spaces.
  • Analyze fault alarms from the building management and fire alarm systems, investigating and resolving any issues.
  • Adhere to Health and Safety regulations and the Trust's policies and procedures.
  • Complete all necessary documentation for departmental operations.
  • Participate in training programs to enhance skills and knowledge relevant to the technician role.
  • Engage in on-call duties as needed to ensure service delivery.
  • Collaborate as a responsible team member, demonstrating flexibility to meet client needs.
  • Commit to ongoing training to acquire new skills necessary for departmental requirements.
  • Familiarize yourself with the operational practices of the Estates Maintenance Department.
  • Gain knowledge of complex equipment operations to facilitate effective troubleshooting and repairs.

Qualifications

Essential

  • HNC/D, NVQ level 4, C&G, or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Proven experience as a mechanical technician.

Desirable

  • IOSH Working Safely certification.

Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrated experience in a maintenance/service role.
  • Experience in a supervisory capacity.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Strong understanding of Health & Safety procedures.

Desirable

  • In-depth knowledge of building services engineering.
  • Familiarity with Building Management Systems.
  • Understanding of steam-raising equipment, particularly steam generators.
