About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Systems Engineer to join our Materials and Mechanical Metrology department at the National Physical Laboratory. As a key member of our team, you will have the opportunity to work on a range of instrumentation and metrology projects, providing technical expertise that informs our strategy and shapes our site infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the requirements definition and management, overall system architecture, assembly, integration, validation, and verification of scientific instrumentation.
  • Identify and implement the highest quality technical solutions in a cost-effective manner, while meeting schedule requirements.
  • Appraise equipment and make recommendations for further efficiencies and compliance, ensuring all safety procedures are followed and reported.
  • Provide technical leadership of project teams, working closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure a satisfactory design, development, and delivery process.
  • Manage multidisciplinary science and engineering teams, mentoring and leading a small team of Systems Engineers allocated to each project.

Requirements

  • Degree in Physics or an applicable engineering subject area (Optical, Mechanical, Electronics, Systems, or Software), or equivalent.
  • Industry Systems Engineering experience across the full Systems Engineering Lifecycle.
  • Experience in developing and delivering complex instrumentation and control systems, working to deadlines in a multi-project environment.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of technologies.
  • Excellent analytical and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Project management skills.
