Primary Purpose of the Role:

We are looking for a Naval Architect or Senior Naval Architect to join our team on a full-time basis.

The Naval/Senior Naval Architect will be tasked with delivering specialized technical expertise to various teams across Thales UK, supporting maritime Mine Countermeasure (MCM) programs throughout their lifecycle.

As such, the Naval/Senior Naval Architect will report to the MCM Principal Naval Architect for all matters related to naval architecture and engineering in a marine context.

This role will involve collaborating with mixed-discipline teams to oversee or engage in naval architecture and engineering activities that necessitate the specific knowledge, skills, or SQEP experience of the incumbent.

The ideal candidate will work on a variety of intriguing and demanding projects, both domestically and internationally, closely partnering with our clients to ensure Thales meets their expectations. Flexibility to travel and work at different locations is essential.

Principal Relationships:
  • MCM Principal Naval Architect
  • Engineering Delivery Managers (EDM)

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:
  • Provide specialized technical guidance and governance for all ship integration activities in a maritime context, including whole ship, hull, superstructure, propulsion systems, auxiliary systems, outfit, and relevant shore-side infrastructure and facilities.
  • Act as an informed customer to subcontractors and third parties regarding Naval Architecture and general engineering in a marine environment.
  • Engage technically with subcontractors, certification bodies, and other business lines within Thales in naval architecture, including reviewing and accepting deliverables.
  • Conduct calculations related to Naval Architecture artifacts, including stability, hydrodynamic and hydrostatic assessments, weight and buoyancy evaluations, and load analysis.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to advise mixed teams of hardware, systems, and software engineers on Naval Architecture and engineering matters.
  • Collaborate closely with EDMs, PDAs, and the Principal Naval Architect to communicate project status and convey domain knowledge to both technical and non-technical audiences for informed decision-making.
  • Address and resolve emergent issues in Naval Architecture and marine engineering throughout the design lifecycle.
  • Manage technical aspects of platform upgrades and/or defect/problem reports on both deliverable and company MCM vessels.
  • Represent Thales in the field, ensuring that manufacturing, commissioning, and repair tasks adhere to appropriate standards and that design intent is well understood.

Expected Competence Level:

Essential Skills:
  • Proven experience in engaging with clients and partners, possessing deep expertise in naval architecture and marine engineering.
  • Experience in overseeing and conducting technical calculations, investigations, and problem-solving related to naval architecture throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Ability to coordinate internal and external resources to deliver timely and accurate technical services to clients and colleagues regarding maritime aspects of complex defence projects.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to remain composed and focused under pressure.
  • Proficient technical writing and presentation skills.
  • Experience in customer and stakeholder management (internal & external).
  • Capability to apply skills and project-based experience independently while providing support and guidance to less experienced colleagues and advice to senior members of the organization.

Desirable Skills:
  • In-depth knowledge of Classification Rules, International Standards, and Defence Standards.
  • Experience in overseeing inclining experiments and interpreting results, making recommendations for subsequent remedial actions.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret technical drawings, review mechanical designs, assess Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and manage simulation modeling.
  • Experience in supporting bid teams by providing technical input, identifying work packages, risk areas, and estimating technical activities.
  • Experience working internationally in a technical and customer-facing role, with knowledge of complex ship regeneration and new build programs.
  • Proven ability to provide technical leadership within assigned responsibilities and work within multi-disciplinary teams to design, estimate, and deliver technical solutions.
  • Familiarity with engineering requirements, standards, and processes for large complex systems, including acting as a peer reviewer of engineering deliverables on projects.
  • Experience in requirements tracing from design through to development and acceptance.
  • Strong knowledge and application of Engineering Project Delivery and processes across the full project lifecycle, with an understanding of commercial considerations.

Values & Behaviours:

  • Team Collaboration
  • Innovation
  • Employee Development

Financial / Budgetary Responsibility:
  • Participate in regular performance reviews of project work packages against milestones and budgets, providing qualitative assessments of the value of work performed.

Qualifications:

  • Depending on the level, the Naval Architect/Senior Naval Architect will be registered with a professional body and either Chartered or working towards Chartership
