Spherical Search is collaborating with a prominent analytical testing and contract research organization (CRO) specializing in inhalation drug delivery, partnering with device manufacturers and pharmaceutical firms to create innovative and safe products.

We are seeking a Senior Specialist (Formulation) to enhance our team.

ROLE OVERVIEW

The successful candidate will serve as a scientific and technical authority in aerosol formulation. Responsibilities will encompass expertise in various areas, including:

  • Development of biologics formulations (peptides, proteins, nucleic acids).
  • Particle engineering, particularly in spray drying techniques.
  • Dry powder formulation utilizing advanced blending techniques and metering processes.
  • Liquid formulation, including solutions, emulsions, and suspensions.
  • Formulation and characterization of Pressurized Metered Dose Inhalers (pMDIs).
  • Creation of formulations for nasal sprays, nebulizers, pMDIs, and dry powder platforms, considering excipient and process selections.
  • Formulation of small synthetic molecules and biomolecules, including antibodies and viral vectors.
  • High-level understanding of physical-chemical characterization to evaluate drug substances/APIs and candidate formulations for drug product development.

The role will also involve supporting Business Development by acting as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) in your field. This includes:

  • Engaging in discussions with potential and existing clients to understand their requirements and develop proposals.
  • Creating a viable costing model and charging structure for new initiatives.
  • Facilitating the technical onboarding of new clients/projects to ensure smooth transitions into project execution.

Additionally, the role will support the Pharmaceutical Development teams, ensuring efficient delivery of our revenue-generating portfolio. Responsibilities may include:

  • Training and mentoring team members.
  • Reviewing and ensuring the scientific accuracy of reports and protocols.
  • Leading discussions and presentations with customers and stakeholders.
  • Resolving technical challenges encountered during project execution.
  • Making critical scientific decisions to maintain project momentum and justifying these decisions to stakeholders.

Furthermore, the position will involve collaboration with customers and academic/regulatory agencies on product development programs, which may include:

  • Participating in workshops, technical discussions, and project reviews to leverage your expertise.
  • Leading cross-functional teams to address critical challenges and advance the company’s technological capabilities.

The role will also encompass conducting and overseeing innovative research and development in aerosol-based delivery technologies, including:

  • Comprehensively scoping projects, including business cases and execution plans, while collaborating with various teams.

To continuously enhance the company’s capabilities and reputation, responsibilities will include:

  • Presenting at conferences, leading Key Opinion Leader (KOL) meetings, conducting webinars, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Serving as a scientific leader and influencer within the organization.

Acting as the technical expert in inhalation/aerosol formulation and delivery technologies, the candidate will support customers, team members, academic/industrial partners, regulatory agencies, Senior Management, R&D, and Business Development.

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATION

  • Essential: A first degree in a scientific, pharmacy, or relevant discipline with a grade of 2.1 or above.
  • PhD in a relevant discipline is preferable.
  • Essential: Extensive experience in formulation development within the drug delivery sector, particularly with peptides and/or proteins.
  • Strongly desired: Expertise in one or more of the following areas:
  • Pharmaceutical aerosol formulation development.
  • Spray drying techniques.
  • Bioavailability enhancement formulation strategies.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Proven experience in advanced development functions within the pharmaceutical industry, leading exploratory product development programs.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple complex priorities under pressure.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Experience presenting at scientific meetings, webinars, and conferences.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment and handle multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and a proactive approach to influence without direct authority.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate complex information clearly and accurately.
  • Strong customer relations and client-facing skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents.
  • Proficient in writing detailed analytical reports and technical procedural instructions.
  • Thorough knowledge of the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.
